National Geographic Channel Receives Documentary Awards at SAFTAS

Taboo Africa: Born Identity? , first local European commission filmed in South Africa won Best International Non Fiction Format award.

The NGCI production Touching the Dragon triumphed as Best Director Wildlife Programming and Best Wildlife Programme.

The production Devil's Lair , chosen Best Documentary, was acquired by FOX Inetrnational Chanels Africa to be broadcasted on FOX Crime.

Johannesburg, 10 April 2014 - Taboo Africa: Born Identity? , the first local European commission filmed in South Africa by National Geographic Channel, has triumphed at the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) as Best International Non Fiction Format, a distinction that recognizes the prestige of a special production developed by the TV channel with the support from the local production company, Clive Morris Productions, and the FOX International Channels (FIC) Africa team.

Taboo Africa: Born Identity? responds to FIC's bet for Africa not only in terms of channel distribution, but in content focused on African stories and perspectives for the African audiences. The show was fully developed from the company's local office in South Africa, but with an international view that guarantees the broadcasting of the documentary on the NGCI networks worldwide.

Taboo Africa: Born Identity? premiered on National Geographic Channel across Europe and Africa in 2013. The episode continues to air in all European markets and any future repeats will be announced at the local level.

This is an example of a very well executed local production that responds to the quality standards of NGCI and at the same time that proves the expertise of local talent as well as the extraordinary coordination of our international and local teams , said Hamish Mykura, NGCI's Executive Vice President and Head of International Content.

National Geographic Channel also received the Best Director Wildlife Programming and Best Wildlife Programme for Touching the Dragon , an NGCI production that has been broadcast in Africa on NGC and Nat Geo Wild channels. The significance of these wildlife awards serves to highlight the quality of the content currently being produced in Africa for the channels, as 40% of all wildlife content currently produced is made in Africa for global audiences.

FIC Africa is also proud to announce that a recent acquisition Devil's Lair , won in the Best Documentary category, an independent production from Fireworx Media, will broadcast on FOX Crime in May 2014.

The winners of the South African Film and Television Awards were announced at the industry event held at Gallagher Estate in Johannesburg this past Saturday.
