National Geographic Traveler Magazine to Feature Reader-Submitted Photo on Cover

WASHINGTON (Sept. 2, 2015)-For the first time ever, National Geographic Traveler is inviting readers to shoot a cover photo for the magazine as part of an assignment on Your Shot, National Geographic's photo community. The winning photo, chosen by National Geographic Traveler magazine editors, will appear on the cover of the December 2015/January 2016 issue, which will feature the annual Best of the World list.

Your Shot regularly asks its more than 600,000 members to go on assignment with National Geographic by contributing photos around a theme, with the editors picking their favorites. For this assignment, National Geographic Traveler magazine Editor-in-Chief Maggie Zackowitz is asking Your Shot members to submit photos of their best place - the favorite destination to which they've traveled - to correspond with the Best of the World magazine feature.

This is the first time any National Geographic publication has asked readers to shoot a cover photo, and I'm thrilled that Traveler is offering the opportunity to the talented Your Shot community, Zackowitz said. I'm eager to see the submissions and to be transported to our readers' favorite places around the globe.

Throughout the assignment, editors will comment on submissions that grab their attention and curate their favorites. After the assignment concludes Sept. 22, the editors' top choices will be published in a Your Shot story with commentary about why each photo was selected.

I'm delighted to give our Your Shot members the chance to shoot a magazine cover for Traveler, said Monica Corcoran, Your Shot director. With nearly 5 million photos shared on Your Shot already, I am continuously impressed by the community's talent for bringing their travels to life. The winning photo will be announced in mid-November. The December/January issue of Traveler will be on newsstands Dec. 1.
