The challenges of non-scripted: upcoming Aframe webinar

Non-scripted is a challenging genre for any producer.

As a format it has been on our screens for decades. Non-scripted as a term covers a broad range of styles, everything from single documentaries such as BAFTA winning 7/7: One Day In London, The Plane Crash; fly-on-the-wall series like One Born Every Minute, Our War or 24 Hours in A&E; factual entertainment like Great British Bake Off, Grand Designs and The Apprentice; and reality series like Big Brother, I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here and Springwatch (Big Brother with more civilized animals).

As well as the creative challenges involved in making any production, non-scripted brings its own technical and organisational issues, which can often be avoided with appropriate planning. As a genre, non-scripted usually involves huge shoot ratios, far and away above what one would expect for scripted. Even for a small production, shoot ratios can often hit 150:1 - in the case of larger productions and reality formats such as Big Brother this can be as much as 500:1 or higher.

Thanks to tapeless workflows producers can shoot as much footage as they want, without needing to worry about the physical and financial limitations of tape. But, of course, the collection of digital files this creates can be huge, requiring terabytes worth of storage.

Moving all of that media poses its own difficulties. And having to take all of your footage into an edit suite just to view it can add unnecessary delays and expense. You have the headache of logging all this footage and making some sense of it and then the possibilities for more confusion with the back-and-forth of FTPs, couriers and emails that traditional review and approval workflows usually entail.

It doesn't have to be like this.
