SBS 2 stands up and delivers the lolz with first comedy commission

Rapid-fire jokes, biting social commentary and smart observational humour - that is what the newest crop of Australian comedians are delivering and that is what SBS 2 and Princess Pictures will be showcasing in the new ten part comedy series that has been commissioned to hit screens early 2014.

Like a hippy parent with a new born baby, we're going to wait for this show's personality to develop before we give it a name. When the time's right we'll let you know and upload adorable Instagram pics to our tumblr, Facebook, and twitter accounts, which you will all be able to share, like and retweet.

Filming next month at the iconic Bella Union, in the Trades Hall Melbourne, the show will feature live routines from a group of talented and diverse stand ups, with behind the scenes interviews where The Chaser's Chas Licciardello will explore the stories behind these routines and how they each found their unique comedic voice.

I cant wait to learn the deepest secrets of the countrys brightest young comic talents. And I particularly cant wait to exploit those secrets in order to thwart and destroy those young comic talents before they pose too significant a threat to my own middling career, said Chas.

The show will star Nazeem Hussain (Legally Brown), Dan Ilic (Can of Worms, Hungry Beast), host of SBS 2's new entertainment program Thursday FC Matt Okine, Winner of the 2012 Melbourne International Comedy Festival Ronny Chieng, 22 year old comedy wonder kid Joel Creasy, Melbourne International Comedy Festival favourite Geraldine Hickey, hilarious indigenous comedian Kevin Kropinyeri, and Egyptian born 2011 Raw Comedy Finalist Khaled Khalafalla, to name a few.

SBS Director of Television Tony Iffland said: SBS has an incredibly proud history of launching the careers of talented Australian comedians whose comedy styles are fearless, daring and provocative. Giving a voice to up-and-coming multicultural performers is key to SBS's commitment to growing SBS 2's new identity as the channel for emerging culture.

This show is the perfect fit for us and we are thrilled to be working with Princess Pictures on the first comedy commission for SBS 2.

Comedian Nazeem Hussain of Legally Brown, SBS ONE said: Stand up comedy for me, is a way to let off some steam without injuring myself. Im most excited about being interviewed by Chas. Ive been told numerous times he is my white doppelg nger. Im pretty sure thats a compliment.

Comedian Dan Ilic is already questioning his comedy roots ahead of filming. Dan said: Im not a real comedian, Im a fake, a phoney, a charlatan, real comedians have problems with their parents, or childhood, and my childhood was pleasant and fulfilling. Which is the source of my neurosis now Why werent my parents drug addicts? Why was I loved so much as a child? Didnt they realise how hard it would be for me to become a comedian? thanks for nothing Mum and Dad!

Filming starts Saturday October 5 in Melbourne with five nights of side splitting live comedy, featuring over 30 performers, shining the spotlight on the new generation of local comics.
