GoPro Joins Camp Chef on the Great Salt Lake for Duck and Pheasant Hunting

In early November, GoPro and Camp Chef teamed up to share the excitement and beauty of the Great Salt Lake with outdoor writers from around the country. As the largest saltwater lake in the Western Hemisphere, it is often called America's Dead Sea. To the contrary, it is home to millions of native birds, shorebirds and waterfowl and sits in the Pacific Flyway, playing host to incredible numbers of migrating ducks and geese as they make their way south each fall.

The Great Salt Lake is also the home of the airboat, first imagined and built by staff at the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge to help aid in bird surveys in the early 1940's. These craft have since become popular as tourist attractions and vehicles aiding sportsman navigating the nation's most challenging swamps and marshes.

The GoPro crew was able to get a little airboat action of its own, running across the Great Salt Lake's miles of knee-deep water to access prime duck hunting areas. Once there, the crew set out thousands of silhouette decoys and laid in dry boxes to draw in the passing waterfowl. This style of hunting was invented on the Great Salt Lake and is unique to the area.

The next day, the crew experienced the up-close and personal action associated with hunting out of a layout boat in the middle of Farmington Bay, a brackish backwater of the Great Salt Lake. Literally alone in the middle of an expanse of water in a shallow boat, tucked amongst dozens of decoys, the waterfowl viewing and shooting was out of this world, with dozens of species of ducks showing up in the spread every day.

The entire experience was capped off by some fast-paced pheasant hunting and skeet shooting back on White's Ranch in Paradise, Utah, where the whole crew stayed and ate during the trip. And it was made even better by some incredible dog-work by two Springer Spaniels named Lilly and Sugar, who worked hard to flush and retrieve over thirty birds.

Throughout the trip, the Camp Chef staff made sure the hunters were well-fed, making up everything from breakfast burritos in the airboat to smoked tri-tip on the dyke road in Farmington Bay.
