Fantastic Fest is upon us, and were pumped for showing more films than we ever have before. Six (count em, six) of our 2014 slate will be represented, so read up on them a little below and be sure plan your schedule around them!
Borgman was recently named the Netherlands official nominee for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Academy Awards. Making its North American premiere recently at TIFF, Borgman follows the titular character, an enigmatic vagrant who enters the lives of a bourgeois family, with ample strangeness following suit. Equally creepy and hilarious, its been called a perverse, nihilistic hybrid of Pasolini's oft-referenced TEOREMA and Wim Wenders' WINGS OF DESIRE (Fangoria).
Cheap Thrills made a such an impression on us when it premiered at SXSW in March that we bought it immediately. Director EL Katzs directoral debut stars Pat Healy (Compliance) as a recently unemployed father who desperately engages in a series of escalating dares for cash and is a squirmy, black-comedy masterpiece (Hitfix). Winner of the Audience Award at SXSWs Midnighters section and getting ready to embark on a limited, highly anticipated festival campaign, Cheap Thrills is poised as our first new release in early 2014.
Ari Folmans follow-up to his Academy Award-nominated Waltz With Bashir is his psychedelic, quasi-sci fi meditation on Hollywood, The Congress. Based on a novel by Stanislaw Lem, the film stars Robin Wright as herself (but as an actress on the verge of retiring) who allows herself to be scanned and her digital likeness to continue her acting career. Bursting with creativity, The Congress is half live-action before shifting to lush animation. Empire described it as An extraordinary and very touching film that exists somewhere in the twilight zone between the existential brainteasers of Charlie Kaufman and the psychedelic wonders of Hayao Miyazaki.
The prolific Ben Wheatleys latest film, A Field In England, proves that hes a director who defies categorization. A black and white period piece set during the English Civil War, the film follows a band of deserters in search of a buried treasure. Part mood piece, part experimental psychedelic horror, A Field In England will decidedly leave an impression, as its been claimed to be one of the most captivating, hypnotic and beautiful things you'll ever see on a cinema screen (Time Out).
Nothing Bad Can Happen is the controversial debut of directoral breakout Katrin Gebbe, in which a young Christian punk moves in with a family who subject him to trials of faith. Drawing comparisons to Ulrich Seidl and Michael Haneke, Gebbes Nothing Bad Can Happen is cinema of the angriest kind from a hungry new filmmaker keen to provoke (FSR) and had Scott Foundas of Variety calling for it to receive a special Palme d'Horreur at Cannes!
And, finally, our latest acquisition: Sion Sonos Why Dont You Play In Hell? Fans of Sono (Love Exposure, Suicide Club) may know what to expect, but guaranteed theyll still have no idea what theyre in for. An insane riff on yakuza films thats equal part a love story between characters an well as a love song for 35mm, Why Dont You Play In Hell? made its North American debut at TIFF to gleefully immense response. Deemed [q]uite possibly mankinds greatest achievement, by Film.com, it was granted TIFFs coveted Midnight Madness Award.
Each film screens twice over the course of the week, so choose your schedule wisely. We hope you enjoy our 2014 titles as much as we do, and theres still more in store...
