MTN sends out warnings Email scams still exist, no inbox is safe from them and due to the advance in technology, we are seeing an increase in fraud occur via cell phone. Smart scammers operate by using the service provider as a tool for authenticity and to gain trust.
According to SMSes sent out by MTN this morning, scammers seem to be targeting their customers. The service provider sent out text messages asking customers to be alert. Customers were being asked to deposit money into an account so that prize and competition funds can be released to them.
When logging onto the MTN website we were alerted to a second case of fraud. This warning related to a fake survey doing the rounds. The prize being an Apple iPhone upon completion.
Previous scams One of the last big scams to hit the news occurred in October last year and involved returning a missed call.
This would cost a consumer anywhere from R100 R200. Dubbed Wangiri Fraud, TimesLive reported that Wangiri fraud frequently started on a Friday afternoon as people are relaxed and had time to return calls. The scammers would have a premium phone line set up that charged a lot such as R100 a minute. Consumers called, the line was dropped and they were a couple hundred bucks poorer.
They also noted that this took place on an international level and that the syndicates called hundreds of thousands of numbers across the world.
Good to know everyone is considered a target.
What you can do to prevent scams Be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to your service provider. Should something seem suspicious query it before taking any action. Especially if it involves passwords and large sums of money.
