It's fair to say there have been enough arguments about the pros and cons of cloud computing to make a gripping episode of the Jeremy Kyle Show. We'd certainly tune in to that one! If you've finally realised the benefits (what took you so long?!), your next question is likely to be, do we build a private cloud ourselves or buy (rent) infrastructure from a service provider?
By definition, private clouds are built using your own resources, your own datacenter and they leave you to manage the overheads. Public cloud services relieve you of the necessity to manage the infrastructure at the marginal expense of some control. But that doesn't really stand to say which is better.
In case you didn't already know, Aframe is a public cloud with a difference unlike Amazon, Google and other public clouds which run multiple applications for different customers, we built our cloud from the ground up to be single purpose. It means we're tailored specifically to the demands of video production.
Ok, so we're probably a little biased about public vs private cloud, so we'll do this from a purely factual standpoint.
1) Public clouds move capital expenditure (CapEx) to operational expenditure (OpEx) Quite simply, you pay-as-you-go rather than having to invest hundreds of thousands upfront as well as paying monthly running costs.
2) Public clouds stop you from becoming a datacenter business Unless you want to become a datacenter and spend a lot (and we mean, a LOT) of time worrying about servers, it's probably worth avoiding private clouds.
3) Public clouds have far greater economies of scale Private clouds simply can't compete when it comes to price. Public cloud providers spread the infrastructure costs between many customers and pass the economies of scale savings on to their customers.
4) Private clouds run on old technology They may not initially as you probably bought the best tech around when you invested in the first place. But at the rate technology changes, can you afford to upgrade your infrastructure every year? What's more, try getting your organisation to sign it off every 12 months. With public clouds, it's in their interest to run on the latest technology so they can stay competitive.
5) Public clouds offer far greater flexibility Your demands on cloud infrastructure probably change on a monthly basis (both up and down). So your organisation has to build in and maintain various servers to meet spikes in demand. Public clouds offer the same spare capacity.
6) You have more control over a private cloud As you're in the driving seat you can choose exactly how it's set up, how it operates and its basic operations. With public clouds, you're bound to the basic parameters of the service provider. That's not to say you have no control with a public cloud APIs are often offered to enable you to create your perfect workflow
7) Extending the reach of a private cloud is difficult A private cloud operates within your own network infrastructure, that means it's difficult (or impossible) to access files from outside your company's network. Say goodbye to remote working.
8) Just because it's a private cloud , doesn't mean it's secure If it's on the internal network, it must be secure... right?
9) Security is at the center of public cloud provider's interests Any public cloud with a poor reputation for security is dead in the water. They're providing a service after all and if they do that poorly, they've got nothing else to fall back onto.
10) Private cloud staff competence is an unknown Public cloud providers attract the best specialists in the field. You've probably got many talented and knowledgeable people within your organisation, but is data security and cloud infrastructure a primary concern for any of them?
