Nokia and Asia Pacific Telecom launch live 5G service using Taiwan's first shared wireless network
Deal builds on existing relationship with the Taiwanese operator to power first 5G service across the island using a Multi-Operator Core Network
Live Non-Standalone Service positions the operator to quickly introduce 5G Standalone to enable advanced services
26 October 2021
Espoo, Finland - Nokia today announced that its 5G Core is serving Asia Pacific Telecom Co. Ltd.'s (APT) live 5G Non-Standalone (NSA) and VoLTE service, using the Multi-Operator Core Networks (MOCN) capability to share the 5G RAN.
APT launched 5G services on Taiwan's 3.5GHz frequency band by utilizing Nokia's 5G NSA Core in mid-August, which is the first-of-its-kind MOCN in the country.
Supported by Nokia Cloud Packet Core, Registers, Signaling, Policy, Charging, cloud infrastructure, NetGuard security and NetAct network management, APT can now launch their 5G new services at ease. The 3GPP standard complied Nokia Core network software provides APT smooth integration with the shared radio network and unlocking full MOCN capabilities. The full cloud-based solution will further pave the way towards zero-touch automation capabilities that drive greater scale and reliability.
Nokia leads the market in core network deployments, with 25 of the top 40 communication service providers relying on its core network products.
Nan-Ren Huang, President of Asia Pacific Telecom, said: We are pleased to work with our long-term strategic partner Nokia on launching 5G services by utilizing their 5G NSA Core this year. With this roll-out, we are now serving reliable 5G and VoLTE connection, new services, and premium 5G experience to our subscribers across the island, powered by Nokia's Core and software solutions.
Fran Heeran, SVP & Head of Core Networks, Cloud and Network Services, Nokia, said: With Nokia's advanced, open and flexible 5G Core, APT can deploy 5G service across its network, quickly and reliably, to meet the growing demands of its customer base. Our customers, like APT, want to be able to deploy their next generation networks in an open and flexible manner, without being locked into proprietary infrastructure and software; and this, along with the strength of our technology, is why Nokia's Core software continues to be the best placed in the market.
