High dynamic load carrying capacity and increased imbalance compensation are key features of the extremely powerful control electronics in the FAG Active Magnetic Bearing for shafts weighing more than 700 kg. Schaeffler offers in addition customer-specific prototypes for active magnetic bearings systems with shaft weight less than 700 kg. This electronic comes for the first time from Schaeffler. The magnetic bearing system is continuously monitored, improved and matched to optimum operating conditions and forces thanks to the condition monitoring and intelligent assessment systems provided by Schaeffler. This allows predictive analysis and preventative maintenance for the total operating life of the product.

High performance standardized solutions

A wide range of different performance classes are available due to the standardized electronic control systems and power electronics already established in the drive technology industry for bearing solutions of shaft weights more than 700 kg from Schaefflers development partner Siemens. FAG Active Magnetic Bearings are therefore available 14 A to 150 A inverters with an intermediate circuit voltage of 540 VDC. These electronics are considerably more powerful than the maximum voltage found on the market of 300 VDC and this allows larger air gaps in the magnetic bearing and also electronics to be adapted according to customers specific requirements. The dynamic load carrying capacity of the magnetic bearing can be enormously increased by using higher currents for a constant voltage. Due to this aspect rotors with higher imbalance can be supported safely and stable through magnetic bearing.

The more recently developed smaller magnetic bearing systems for shafts up to 700 kg use power electronics developed by Schaeffler for the first time. Schaefflers electronics full fill the drive technology industry standard and are compatible with all the current bus systems and interfaces.

A range of different customer process requirements can be met due to the unique adaptability of the drive technology solutions. Previously, plant operators had to have a separate power electronics created for each process. The adaptability of the electronics in the FAG Active Magnetic Bearing means customers can control the magnetic bearings operation themselves.

Condition monitoring for process optimization

The FAG Active Magnetic Bearing has a decisive advantage compared to other magnetic bearing systems available on the market, irrespective of size: Rolling bearings are fitted as back-up bearings. If a touchdown or shaft drop occurs, the bearings status can be quickly checked using the FAG ProCheck condition monitoring system. This reduces machine downtime. Using FAG ProCheck allows the machine to be put back into operation quickly without having to carry out a time-consuming inspection of the back-up bearing.

Thanks to on-line status monitoring and continuous process optimization, the condition monitoring system is forging a path for the Industry 4.0 initiative. It recognizes the beginnings and causes of damage even at their very early stages so that the relevant countermeasures can be put in place in time. The increased system reliability improves both Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) as well as Total Cost of Ownership. Schaefflers remote monitoring, together with its bearing and system expertise allow defects and damage in machines to be recognized without a machine operative having to be on hand.

Complete system from one source

With the FAG Active Magnetic Bearing system solution, Schaeffler has succeeded in developing a convincing complete system that fulfills the increasingly high requirements of large and small machinery in terms of reliability and robustness. A significant leap forward in terms of performance and efficiency has been made thanks to the bundling of expertise from the core technologies of back-up and active magnetic bearings together with system analysis and the use of standardized electronic from drive technology industry sector.

Both the magnetic and back-up bearings are developed and the overall system designed and manufactured at Schaeffler. The systems are tested eventually in the field in cooperation with the customer.
