New facility builds on Ericssons growing investments in Silicon Valley
Brings together approximately 2,000 Ericsson staff dedicated to research and development in IP, TV and Media, SDN, NFV and mobile innovation
Includes more than 400,000 square feet of operational space in two buildings at Santa Clara Square and a state-of-the-art Ericsson Experience Center
Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) today announced the construction of a new campus in Santa Clara, California, the latest in a series of big investments designed to accelerate innovation in Silicon Valley.
The new campus will consolidate Ericssons Silicon Valley operations, bringing together approximately 2,000 Ericsson staff dedicated to driving innovation in IP and TV and Media. The announcement builds on Ericssons commitment to strategic investment in the region, including the acquisition last September of Microsofts Mediaroom TV platforms and services division.
Per Borgklint, Senior Vice President and Head of Business Unit Support Solutions for Ericsson said: Ericssons new campus unites our rapidly expanding Silicon Valley workforce and creates an environment that will inspire our employees and customers. So much of our research and development is built on internal and external collaboration. Together with our customers and partners, Ericsson is driving IP, TV and Media innovation, and accelerating development of the media enabled, interoperable and programmable network of tomorrow.
Santa Clara Square, being developed by Irvine Company, will include over 400,000 square feet of workspace for Ericsson in two buildings, located along the Great America/Bowers corridor at Highway 101, south of Levis Stadium in the heart of Silicon Valley. Interior design will feature Ericssons open and flexible workspace environment, which supports enhanced collaboration. The facility will also feature a state-of-the-art Ericsson Experience Center for customers and partners. Construction is underway and the facility is expected to be available for Phase One occupancy during Q3 2015.
Ericssons expansion in Silicon Valley has grown in tandem with the regions increasing gravitational pull on the technology sector, said Bina Chaurasia, Chief Human Resources Officer, Head of Group Function Human Resources and Senior Vice President, Ericsson. Our company has a growing need for software engineers and employees with a technology savvy skill set who can partner, create, learn, sustain and innovate; helping us move toward what Ericsson calls the Networked Society.
Bina will maintain her global role, but will relocate to the Bay Area.
Silicon Valley plays a critical role in Ericssons efforts to drive the innovation and technology that will shape the future. Since 2009, the region has been the center of development for Ericssons IP solutions; it has cultivated a rich ecosystem of partnerships to deliver innovative network-based experiences with the latest Software Defined Network (SDN), Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) and radio technologies.
Over the years, Ericssons growing presence in Silicon Valley has significantly enhanced our ability to innovate and collaborate with our customers and partners in the region. With our new campus, were accelerating Ericsson research, development and innovation even further, said Maya Strelar-Migotti, Vice President of Development Unit IP and Broadband and Head of Ericsson Silicon Valley.
Silicon Valley is also a center for Ericsson innovation in TV and Media. As a leader in the convergence of IP, TV and Media, Ericsson is uniquely positioned to develop the technologies that will transform the television and video entertainment experiences seen by millions of people every day.
While strengthening its presence, Ericsson is continuing to build an open community in Silicon Valley with partners including the AT&T Foundry, Facebook, and the Linux Foundation OpenDaylight Project. Current projects, including the Ericsson OpenDaylight and Smartphone Labs, will relocate to the new facility. Ericsson will continue its commitment to open the Internet.org Innovation Lab on Facebooks Menlo Park campus in summer 2014.
Ericsson has 15,000 total employees across the United States and Canada, and has invested $7 billion in U.S. acquisitions over the past six years, with plans for further growth and technology leadership in the U.S.
