Belgian-based video solutions provider XL Video recently supplied a projection system for studio recordings of the popular comedy quiz show QI. The set includes two projection screens which are important to the show, displaying clues and visual alerts throughout the game.

The installation was executed while working with production manager Sarah Chaloner and designer Jonathan Paul Green.

XL Video project manager Jeff Bailey specified two of XL s Barco SLM R12 projectors for the projection, each of which fed to a 13ft x 7.5ft screen. Bailey selected the R12 projectors for their three-chip DLP colours and bright 12,000 lumen light output.

Bailey commented, I ve worked on this production since the planning stage for the first series of QI back in 2003. The production team are great to work with, and I m delighted to be involved with this long-running and much-loved show!

XL also supplied Repro H screens, which were selected due to their ability to minimise the hot spot which the camera sees in the projected picture particularly important when projection is used for broadcast media. In order to further decrease hot-spotting , the projectors were mounted on 18ft high towers and angled down at the screens. The images were then digitally adjusted in the projectors to correct geometric distortion.

QI, which was originally created by John Lloyd, is hosted by English comedian and actor Stephen Fry and regularly features English stand-up comedian Alan Davies on the panel. The current season which airs on BBC2 in the UK, was recorded at The London Studios, with a total of 16 shows recorded during the six week run.
