CreaTV Chooses Tightrope Media Systems for Online Video Distribution

CreaTV San Jose, the community access provider serving San Jose, California, has chosen the Cablecast Reflect online video distribution service from Tightrope Media Systems (TRMS) to distribute select CreaTV programmingas live or video-on-demand streamsin high-definition. The Reflect solution integrates tightly with the central on-site Cablecast server to conserve bandwidth while still allowing the community to view all of the networks programming.

Founded in 2006, CreaTV produces four non-commercial PEG channelstwo for community access and two for educationthat are carried locally by Comcast. Residents, businesses, schools and organizations in San Jose and parts of nearby Campbell, CA are invited to become CreaTV members, learn about television production, and access CreaTV studio facilities and field gear to produce their own shows.

While our programming is broadcast in SD, our goal is to push the content to the Web in HD, said Justin Cowgill, Chief Technology Officer for CreaTV. But as a budget-challenged community access provider, content delivery networks (CDNs) and cloud storage can be expensiveespecially if the services charge by the megabyte when were dealing in gigabytes of data. Cablecast Reflect is a game-changer because it makes HD online content distribution affordable. Since Tightrope really understands the needs of PEG channel providers, theyve designed an automated, affordable solution thats perfect for us.

As integrated with the main Cablecast VOD server, Cablecast Reflect stores a copy of videos in the cloud as needed. Once the file has been uploaded to the cloud, subsequent viewers will retrieve the file from the cloud without using any of CreaTVs bandwidth. Content can be pulled from any of the four CreaTV channels:

Community Channel 15, which features content produced by more than 120 member producers in ten languages

Bay Voice Channel 27, a regional community education channel featuring content from local colleges, as well as thematic programming covering politics, civic engagement and the arts

Classrooms Channel 28, featuring programming dedicated to K-12 education

Silicon Valley Channel 30, featuring CreaTV curated programming for Silicon Valleys diverse communities covering politics, public health, sports, and special interest topics

CreaTV San Jose is additionally in the process of transitioning its Cablecast SX SD video serversincluding one Cablecast Pro VOD server and three live streaming serversto Cablecast SX HD video servers as part of its comprehensive HD upgrade. CreaTV San Jose will also add an HD router, reference monitors, and other HDTV gear by the end of 2015.

We can have tens of thousands of files that viewers want to see online, but if they arent watching them, the high CDN usage and cloud storage fees we pay are a waste, said Cowgill. Reflect lets us store only whats needed in the cloud, for as long as its needed. Its fantastic the way Reflect automates cloud-based content distribution while making it affordable for the PEG community.
