Guptas to shell out R100m for double wedding in Abu Dhabi

As reported by Tabelo Timse and Susan Comrie from amaBhungane, the wedding will cost approximately R100m, while their former mine workers are still waiting for their salaries.

amaBhungane obtained a copy of the nine-page wedding invitation which describes the five-day celebrations in great detail - from the welcome lunch on Tuesday, 19 February 2019, to the wedding reception on Sunday, 24 February.

Shubhangi Singhala, the daughter of Rajesh Tony Gupta, will be tying the knot with Chetan Jain, while Atul Gupta's son Srikant Singhala will be walking down the aisle with Akhya Bansal during the shared ceremony.

Family, friends, and A-listers will gather on the 19 February for a Welcome Lunch from 12:30 onwards, followed by the Godh Bharai and Tilak ceremony at 16:00. Both ceremonies mark the acceptance of the bride and the groom into each other's families. The Mehendi Ceremony follows at 19:00.

The Ring Ceremony and Wedding Extravaganza will take place on Wednesday 20 February, while guests can look forward to the Varmala and Mangal phere ceremony the following day.

The upcoming nuptials will cost the Gupta family approximately R100m and will include 14 events over the course of a week. Far from being purely about love, the wedding is also a show of the Gupta's wealth.

The nine-page invitation shows the family's crest on the front page, while their business logos are printed on the last page.

One of the logos is from the Koornfontein mine, were more than 20 alleged copper thieves are still trapped underground after a gas explosion earlier this week.

The mine shut its doors last year, and several employees have gone unpaid since October 2018. The death toll has since risen to six and rescue missions were halted due to safety concerns.

Speed Mashilo, the Mpumalanga COGTA MEC, confirmed that the rescue teams are in the process of installing a generator to restore power to the mine.

Only once the fans in mines are up and running and the methane levels have dropped will rescue teams be able to remove the bodies and bring the survivors, if any, to the surface.
