Amor Participates on SpaceVision Panel

Microspace Vice President & General Manager Joe Amor recently participated as a panelist for Society of Satellite Professional International (SSPI) at the SpaceVision 2014 Conference, hosted by Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (SEDS). SEDS is an independent, student-based organization which promotes the exploration and development of space.

As a sponsor of SpaceVision 2014, SSPI conducted the panel entitled Careers in Commercial Satellites . The panel addressed such questions as: What are the opportunities available today and what kinds of skills and interests do they require? Where are the geographic hotspots of the business? Where is the innovation fire burning hottest and businesses growing fastest? The panel also introduced the students to senior executives from the industry, giving them the chance to discuss how the industry is structured, what it does and how it works, and to help them understand career opportunities.

Panelists were asked to; introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about your career in the satellite industry.

After Amor introduced himself as the VP&GM of Microspace Communications, he spoke about one of his first jobs as a college student, working on a network of check cashing machines (called RSU's) in grocery stores. The machine was based on 1200 bit per second analog modems and was the precursor for what we know as ATM's. At Microspace we now deliver multi-megabit video, data and audio to over 250,000 businesses via satellite and we have internet services, too.

The panelists all spoke about the changes in the satellite industry over the past few decades, and how students today need to be prepared for changes in their careers. The field of communications is evolving quickly and, with satellites being a part of the communications industry, satellite technology will evolve too.
