Old school South African TV shows only 90s kids will remember

South African TV shows have always been the source of our entertainment, whether we like to admit it or not. Today, we have the luxury of connecting to a cable network and watching international programs. However, back then, SABC was all we had only the rich folk could afford an M-Net connection.

If you are a 90s baby, you will agree that this period was the golden age of home entertainment for kids. We did not have the distraction of hi-tech consoles or sophisticated phones.

South African TV shows for the 90s kids When we got back from school, our mate Brett or Nkosiyezulu would come by for an overdose of sugar Rascals, Dirkies, Fresco and the good old sherbert before settling in at the lounge to watch the latest episode of Kideo or Takalani Sesame yeah, it's awkward thinking back to it now but those were the days.

This is the throwback of all throwbacks. Sit back and enjoy the list we have assembled of the South African TV shows '90s babies will definitely remember.

Kideo

Come along and let's all go to Kideo!

That was every South African kid's safe haven. It was the dawn of democracy and this show was important in showing that kids of all races could still have lots of fun playing with each other.

The fun, interactive games and the jingles made for an entertaining show and Kideo was the friend we all wished we had. Mr Chinwag the donkey was a favourite and who can forget about Molly Metronome.

Pumpkin Patch

South Africa's original muppet show and a theme song that is so catchy it could make for a great sample today. Pumpkin Patch is a story of a small, sunny town curated by Laurel.

The fun, make-believe stories they shared still resonate with us decades later. Shout out to the mayor, Uncle Bill, Woofles the watchdog and who can forget about the puppet cousins, Freckles and Speckles.

Wielie Walie

Characters in Wielie Wielie Walie included Sarel Seemonster, Karel Kraai and Bennie Boekwurm. When it was taken off air in 1996, it was one of the longest running TV shows in SA history. We're still not sure what exactly it was about.

Mina Moo

Mina Moo was sponsored by the Dairy Board and its message was to encourage children to drink milk. It had English, Afrikaans, Northern Sotho and Zulu versions. Mina Moo is a loveable cow who owns a dairy. Bak en Terie were the villians. Hands up if it took you until adulthood to click that's a reference to bacteria.

Liewe Heksie

They call her Liewie Heksie, but Levinia is her name

The well-meaning but absent-minded little witch from the Afrikaans radio stories made her South African TV debut in September 1978. Liewe Heksie and her maatjie Blommie soon became a big hit.

Takalani Sesame

We might be cheating a little with this one as it only came 2000 but what is a South African kids TV show without showing love to the legendary Moshe and Kami, Neno, Zulu or Zikwe.

Sesame Street was more of a global franchise but they set a footprint in South Africa and we loved them so much. Moshe, in particular, was just so tall and likeable, the image of what a mate should be like.
