New CBC Cameras Wor ousands of Words

If a picture is worth a thousand words, this article will fall short of that word count - but new pictures will more than make up for it! Over the last few months, WRAL-TV and CBS 10 WILM have deployed a network of high-definition video cameras across the Triangle, Fayetteville, and Wilmington areas. When the first phase of deployment is complete, the network will include a total of ten cameras for TV and WRAL.com. The project also integrates three cameras originally acquired for other projects, including a virtual window into the WRAL Azalea Gardens. All of the cameras provide both still images and live, high-definition video via the Internet.

Many of the cameras provide beauty shots of places downtown Durham (including the Durham Bulls Athletic Park), downtown Fayetteville, and the sun and sand of Carolina Beach - a shot that has been featured on CBS This Morning! Others are focused on showing CBC's commitment to renewable energy by highlighting both phases of Solar Farm 5. Of course, all of the cameras will be on the lookout for changing weather patterns across our area, from hurricanes to snowstorms and everything in between.

It's more than just pretty pictures: The cameras are also a source of revenue for CBC. CBS 10 WILM general manager Connie Knox says, We've done really well with selling the weather camera shots thanks to our local sales manager, Glenn Saulnier. The client loves them because everyone stops to watch the weather. This buy was booked as an annual in 2013 and they loved it so much they renewed the annual again this year. It's a win-win for everyone involved with 200% ROI to WILM in the first year and all gravy in the second. This was so successful that we're in the process of looking for more locations.

Speaking of locations, my personal favorite so far is also the highest - the Tall TowerCam. It's mounted near the top of WRAL-TV's broadcast tower near the Wake/Johnston county line. From 1,865 feet above the ground, it gets a great view of both earth and sky. The views range from breathtaking to newsworthy: We even got a snapshot of Air Force One taking off from RDU during President Obama's last visit to the Triangle.
