Netflix Greenlights First Collaboration with Legendary Filmmaker Park Chan-wook in War and Revolt' (WT)

Set against the chaos of war, the highly anticipated War and Revolt (WT) takes viewers on a gripping journey through the lives of two childhood friends turned adversaries. Starring Gang Dong-won as the formidable Cheon-young and Park Jeong-min as the conflicted Jong-ryeo, the historical film will captivate audiences with its thrilling narrative and star-studded cast.

The inclusion of globally acclaimed filmmaker Park Chan-wook as producer and co-writer adds another layer of excitement and significance, as it is his first film collaboration with Netflix. Known as the filmmaker who put Korean cinema on the map, Park Chan-wook has garnered international acclaim for his distinct storytelling style and visually stunning films.

In War and Revolt, Gang takes center stage as the enigmatic Cheon-young, a character whose remarkable martial prowess defies his humble origins as a slave. Struggling to break free from the chains of servitude, Cheon-young will be brought to life by Gangs extraordinary talent, exuding charm and delivering breathtaking action sequences that will leave audiences in awe.

Opposite Gang, Park Jeong-min assumes the role of Jong-ryeo, Cheon-youngs former master and scion of Joseons most influential military family. After passing the military service exam, Jong-ryeo becomes King Seonjos personal guard, leading to a heart-wrenching reunion with his former friend. Parks portrayal is expected to be nothing short of mesmerizing, as he delves deep into the complex psyche of a man torn between friendship and duty, ultimately facing his own downfall. Both Gang and Park are sharing the screen for the first time.

Exceptional ensemble cast to bring tale to life

Adding to the stellar cast, Cha Seung-won steps into the role of King Seonjo, a monarch who abandons his people at the onset of the Japanese invasion, only to seek redemption by restoring his royal authority after the war. With a proven track record of delivering riveting performances, Cha is set to enthrall audiences once again with his portrayal of the turbulent ruler, embodying the complexities of power and resilience.

Kim Shin-rock, known for her remarkable performance in Hellbound, portrays the resolute Bumdong, a member of the civilian militia who fearlessly defies social norms and confronts any obstacles that cross her path. Jin Seon-kyu takes on the role of Kim Ja-ryeong, a civilian militia leader descended from the traditional ruling class who emerges as an inspiring force amid the chaos of the invasion. Meanwhile, Jung Sung-ill, hailed for his intense performance in The Glory, brings the intimidating Japanese warlord Genshin to life, a character who recognizes Cheon-youngs extraordinary swordsmanship.

Director Kim Sang-man, lauded for the daring and unique storyline on action-thriller Midnight F.M.,masterfully combines the dramatic elements of life during a tumultuous era with exhilarating battle and chase sequences, promising an immersive experience that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.

War and Revolt is produced by MOHO FILM, the powerhouse behind notable works such as Decision to Leave, The Handmaiden, and Snowpiercer, in collaboration with Semicolon Studio.
