PHABRIX releases TAG, the new hand held T&M instrument for every engineer The PHABRIX TAG proved a huge hit for UK based test and measurement innovator PHABRIX limited at IBC this year. Heralded as a new low cost entry analyser/monitor, the TAG makes PHABRIX s innovative technology affordable for every engineer including those with a tight budget.

Having already built up a loyal following for its other rugged hand held instruments, the PHABRIX SxA and the eye and jitter enabled PHABRIX SxE, the TAG continues with the hardened aluminium shell and is unique in offering a range of interfaces from composite up to SD-SDI, HD-SDI, 3G-SDI and optical support via the built in SFP cage. With SFP's for optical being installed just about everywhere these days, the TAG will be a huge bonus for those engineers testing broadcast infrastructures whether they be copper or fibre.

According to Paul Nicholls, Director sales and marketing at PHABRIX,

The TAG can't help attract engineers who need a universal standards tester around. When we began designing it the intention was to support areas such as Asia and South America who still have to test older systems. It quickly developed into a tool to appeal to all engineers from entry, pro video through to the big optical network giants who needed to equip their engineers with one tool if the price was right. The reaction to the TAG at IBC has been astounding.'

Among the interfaces, composite analysis and generation has been included for those regions supporting the transition between analogue and digital switchover. The SFP cage is principally for optical infrastructure testing (single and dual SFP modules) however the cage can support a range of SFP's as they become available. Reference input with waveform view and a very useful reference generator output has also been included.

On the audio side the TAG provides a D connector providing both balanced analogue audio and AES I/O. AES waveform display allows visual check for levels and reference lock.

PHABRIX has worked closely with Dolby to provide support for Dolby E, Dolby D and Dolby D plus for the TAG and this along with other advanced options can be added at a later stage if required. The TAG is easy to handle fitting in one hand leaving the other free to attach cabling. PHABRIX were previewing a handy XLR attachment which fixes to the top of the TAG to further enable its audio breakout capabilities.

The TAG benefits from PHABRIX's advanced TCP/IP remote control connection allowing the instrument to be controlled via any standard web browser. Additional data such as screen grab (bmp) and advanced logging can be easily transferred from the instrument situated anywhere within a facility connected by Ethernet.

A lithium polymer battery provides 2-3 hours of untethered operation and the instrument can be mains powered while being recharged as a background task. Talk of a PAG battery mount for the TAG is also under development.

The TAG is on general sale November 2013.
