Ericon Receives IABM Award for Video Storage and Proceing Platform

Ericsson announced that its Video Storage and Processing Platform, a high-performance, software-based infrastructure, has won the 2015 IABM Design and Innovation Award for Storage. The awards recognize innovative new solutions that offer significant benefits or opportunities to the broadcast and media industry.

Ericsson's Media Vision 2020 research predicts that by 2020, time spent watching on-demand and time-shifted content will have reached 50:50 parity with linear and live TV. To remain competitive, TV service providers must ensure that their service offerings evolve to give consumers the control to record and watch live TV content any time, on any device. Shifting key functions of their media architectures to the cloud systematically and cost-efficiently satisfies consumer demand for time-shifted viewing combined with anywhere access'.

The Video Storage and Processing Platform powers Ericsson's Cloud DVR solution, which was launched in April 2015 following Ericsson's acquisition and integration of Fabrix Systems. The high performance all-software platform enables video storage, processing, and delivery applications including cloud DVR and video-on-demand expansion for TV services. Its ability to integrate and virtualize the storage and processing capabilities of the required number of Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) servers means that it can provide significant performance benefits whilst remaining cost efficient, secure and uncomplex.

At IBC2015, Ericsson launched the latest update to the Video Storage and Processing Platform, which brings a variety of new features including support for subtitling of over-the-top (OTT) content, and full support for Ultra HD and HEVC services enabling streaming of high quality video at lower bitrates leading to increased cost-savings.

The enhanced solution is more tightly integrated with the wider Ericsson solutions portfolio including the Mediaroom Reach TV Platform, which enables content delivery to TV Anywhere devices, and the Ericsson Media Delivery Network solution for CDN assist, which allows TV service providers to expand their library and stream content OTT. These new features extend Ericsson's leading position in cloud-centric video platforms.
