In our latest blog, Tim Pearson reflects on CES 2025, the latest trends, and the key conversations held with visitors to the NAGRAVISION booth.
Connect the world, create the future was how one press organization heralded the arrival of this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The annual consumer-tech jamboree held in Las Vegas immediately after the holiday season jump-starts the industry into another year of driving innovation directly into the hearts and minds of today's consumers. With 141,000 visitors recorded, 40% of which were international from over 150 countries, a global audience came to see what was new to the market and how it could be incorporated into propositions across any number of industry verticals.
For the second year in a row, AI dominated. Omnipresent across nearly all the stands it was featured for pragmatic uses such as optimizing business operations and content workflows through to the less obvious - AI-powered BBQ anyone?
NAGRAVISION was once again featured in the Smart Home area of the Venetian Expo, where innovations continue to evolve to meet consumer needs. With many Smart Home technologies now integral to everyday life, a standout area this year was digital health. Given the surging consumer interest in health and wellbeing, the area attracted a large crowd and some of the industry analysts I spoke to suggested these types of services could follow the smart home lead and become bundled as part of an operator's wider digital lifestyle proposition. However, with significant amounts of Personally Identifiable Information (PII) data being required to support this latest trend, consumers are understandably nervous about their digital footprints and the level of cyber threats they are exposed to.
Consumer Cybersecurity One of the most popular areas of discussion on the NAGRAVISION booth was around the future of consumer cybersecurity. As home connectivity evolves and the number of smart devices and apps increases, so does exposure to cyber threats. NAGRA Scout delivers comprehensive network-level protection against common cyber threats and provides continuous security for all smart home connected devices. Real-time threat detection and AI-driven troubleshooting designed to accelerate consumer issue resolution provides additional reassurance to consumers.
The discussions held at the NAGRAVISION booth explored how NAGRA Scout can generate new revenues for operators while bolstering online consumer confidence - critical as the adoption of smart lifestyles continues at pace in areas such as digital health. With sensitive information like medical data and Personally Identifiable Information (PII) being transmitted more frequently, ensuring robust protection both in home and on the go is paramount. NAGRA Scout enhances security by safeguarding residential households through customizable profiles that provide tailored protection for specific devices and individuals, as well as extending security to small businesses navigating these digital advancements.
By exploring the extensive reporting capabilities of NAGRA Scout, operators visiting the NAGRAVISION booth were also able to see the valuable data insights available to them that can be used to optimize networks and drive revenue growth through targeted upsell and advertising opportunities. In addition, discussions centered on how NAGRA Scout integrates with Airties to leverage Smart WiFi opportunities that will further enhance consumer connectivity.
Driving Consumer Engagement At CES, visitor focus is typically on how to drive consumer engagement by identifying from the wide range of new consumer tech, what is going to resonate with consumers in the short and mid-term. This was very much on the mind of the visitors to the NAGRAVISION booth who were looking to broaden their offers beyond media and entertainment and into a wider range of loyalty-driving digital lifestyle services.
To address their needs and provide a roadmap of innovation towards the consumer experience of tomorrow, our streaming platform, powered by OpenTV, demonstrated how aggregation has moved beyond video to now include gaming and other digital lifestyle services and how it is now more critical than ever to also understand consumer behavior and the economics behind it. This includes the use of new loyalty tools such as gamification and reward points that can be used to strengthen the relationship between operator and consumer. Ultimately, this also extends into a web3 world where wallets and crypto currencies are used to trade and reward loyalty - all while giving the consumer the multi-app services that equip them for today's mobile and connected lifestyles. With our visitors, we discussed how the future may be closer than we think and how advanced thinking and innovation from NAGRAVISION can equip operators with the strategy to realize their vision.
Securing Valuable Content Investments What's been interesting to see over the last 12 months is the convergence of the production and distribution worlds when it comes to streaming security technology. Today, we're seeing those involved in movie production distribute pre-release content through the same OTT technology as those in distribution have been doing for several years.
Consequently, the need to optimize operational processes and workflows so that effective streaming security can be deployed across all digital content touchpoints becomes key. As I've written before, streaming security should be approached as if it were a leaky dam with reinforcements applied where necessary to strengthen the dam wall. This requires several solutions and technologies working together to defend against pirate attacks.
At CES, we discussed with several visitors how the latest NAGRAVISION AI-powered streaming security analytics and reporting can identify streaming security thr
