The judges of Cinemark's Young Lions competition have been announced - an exciting milestone as the event of the year fast approaches for those in the South African brand communications industry.
The fate of all competitors' lies in the hands of the judges as one pair stands a chance to travel to Cannes and compete in the international Cannes Young Lions Competition.
The entries for Cinemark's Young Lions competition opened on Wednesday, 1 April and young creatives under the age of 28 have risen to the occasion, entering themselves into one of the most esteemed and beneficial competitions in the creative industry. The local leg of the competition will see a two-man team handpicked by the judges as the winners. These two will have an opportunity to travel to the Cannes Lions Festival and represent South Africa in the Young Lions Competition, taking place between Sunday, 21 and Saturday, 27 June.
Entrants into the Cannes Young Lions 2015 Films Competition will have only 48 hours to film and edit a 60-second commercial. The local competition follows a similar format, where a brief will be published on Tuesday, 21 April at Noon. All creatives must submit their commercial by Thursday, 23 April at Noon. Then the judging will begin.
The judges for 2015 are Fiona O'Connor, Andrew MacKenzie, Glynn Venter, Joanina Pastoll and Tshireletso Yvonne Diogo.
Havas Worldwide Johannesburg creative director, Fiona O'Connor began her career as a graphic designer. During a colourful journey, she moved from being an art director to a creative director. O'Connor has worked at some of the top agencies and on some of the most respected brands in South Africa and the world. The Swaziland-born creative has both won and guided others into winning a fair amount of awards over the last few years. She intends to continue this trend for a while still.
Andrew MacKenzie, executive director of Boomtown, plays a key role in overseeing the creative processes and outputs of the company, ensuring a consistent delivery of high standard, award winning creative solutions that answer the agency's methodology: grow your brand, grow your sales and strengthen your customer relationships. An expert in integrated advertising, MacKenzie has worked on dynamic brands including Goodyear, Coca-Cola, Volkswagen, Audi, Avis and Unilever. He has also led campaigns that have won numerous awards at numerous shows including Loerie Awards, Rebrand 100 Awards, International Circle of Excellence, Assegai Awards, Epica Awards, CLIO Awards and Cannes Awards.
Executive creative director of Haas Collective, Glynn Venter, founded her company in 2011 by working alongside a concept store, a design gallery and a high-end coffee house and roaster in the Bo-Kaap. Her idea was to develop a creative hub that attracts creative talent and expertise and facilitates the start of creative conversations.
Executive creative director of Cross Colours Lowe Joburg, Joanina Pastoll, is a full house when it comes to being a creative guru. She has a number of local and international awards under her belt as well as a history of sitting on judging panels at a combination of local and international awards ceremonies. She was also the president of the Design Category for the London International Awards in 2014.
Marketing manager of Cinemark, Tshireletso Yvonne Diogo has been running all Cannes Lions activity in South Africa for the last three years. She has attended the Cannes Lions Representative Meeting in this latter capacity - where all 90 countries representing the festival back home share the state of creativity as well as best practice in their respective regions. It is the amalgamation of all such effort at Cannes Lions each year that is judged and awarded a Cannes Lion accordingly; thus setting the standard for best practice in global standards. Diogo has also worked on national and international marketing campaigns comprising the Nedbank Golf Challenge, Miss South Africa, acts such as John Legend, Kylie Minogue and Sun City resort to name a few.
These judges will all come together to decide who will win the 2015 local competition. The winners will be announced on Monday, 4 May and will represent South Africa in the Young Lions Competition at the 62nd Cannes Lions Festival.
Diogo says: These leading creative judges raise the bar when it comes to establishing who will be travelling to Cannes to represent the country. All of them bring a unique and talented perspective to the completion, making this year's Young Lions competition more exciting than ever. I am happy to be amongst them, contributing a marketer's perspective in the judging process. After all, winning work has to deliver not only creatively but meet business objectives as well.
Teams who want to see their dreams come true must register for the South African competition by Tuesday, 21 April.
