Fujifilm CALNEO Xair Portable X-ray Unit Wins Gold Award at Good Design Award 2018

FUJIFILM Corporation (President: Kenji Sukeno) is delighted to announce that the portable X-ray unit CALNEO Xair has been selected from among 1,353 entries to the Good Design Award* 2018, organized by the Japan Institute of Design Promotion, as a winner of the Gold Award. This year, the Good Design Gold award was given to 19 products and initiatives on the basis of a comprehensive evaluation of the merits of the design including its contribution to the resolution of social problems, potential for the future, and the quality of the design implementation.

The award-winning CALNEO Xair is Fujifilms first-ever portable X-ray unit. It incorporates a compact and lightweight X-ray tube and battery, achieving a total weight of just 3.5 kg, which supports excellent portability and operability and allows the user to take and confirm simple X-ray images in places with limited space, such as in a home medical-care setting. As the unit uses a cassette DR that achieves high sensitivity detection used in the FUJIFILM CALNEO Smart X-ray diagnostic device, which is equipped with Fujifilms proprietary ISS Irradiation Side Sampling method** and low-noise electrical circuit***, it is capable of capturing high quality images despite low-dose radiation. These features reduce the burden placed on physicians and technicians moving and setting up equipment to provide medical services in the patients home. The device also contributes to be reduced patient radiation exposure.

* The Good Design Award is Japans only system for the comprehensive evaluation and commendation of design. The awards, have been presented since 1988 by the Japan Institute of Design Promotion (then called the Japan Institute of Industrial Design Promotion), and were originally based on the Good Design Product Selection System (usually known as the G Mark System) founded in 1957 by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (now the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry). For more than 50 years, this system has worked to promote the public designs that contribute to the development of industry and the improved quality of public life.

** With the ISS (Irradiation Side Sampling) method, the sensor (TFT panel) is located to the side of the X-rays. Compared to the previous FPD (flat panel detector) method, the energy from the X-rays can be converted into light signals at a stage when more of the X-ray energy can be captured, increasing the X-ray energy conversion efficiency.

*** These electric circuits were previously used for the low noise detection of X-rays, in order to improve X-ray information sensing performance.
