We Are Africa Polokwane Film Festival
The Department of Arts and Culture (DAC) is hosting Africa Month as part of the immediate initiatives of fostering the African Renaissance vision articulated in the Charter for African Cultural Renaissance. The Africa Month intervention will strengthen Socio-Cultural Integration, Economic Integration and Political Integration.
The Department is hosting the Africa Month in partnership with other National Departments, Provincial Departments, Government Agencies, Public Entities and Private and Civil sector through a variety of cultural activities. During the month of May, Africa will be celebrated under the theme: We are Africa , - Opening the doors of learning and culture from Cape to Cairo'. The month long festivities will see South Africa featuring various arts and cultural disciplines including music concert, literature, film, fashion, cuisines and panel discussions.
The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), an agency of the Department of Arts and Culture, will host the We Are Africa Polokwane Film Festival from 8th to the 9th of May 2015 at the University of Limpopo. On the 9th of May the DAC will host a dinner to launch all the film festivities happening in the country, with Elelwani as an opening film. Directed by Ntshavheni wa Luruli and starring Florence Masebe, Ashifashaba Muleya and Mutodi Neshehe, Elelwani is the first Venda film.
The festival initiative is part of the NFVF's Provincial roadshows which are aimed at empowering upcoming filmmakers with relevant information in filmmaking and also to encourage film activity in all regions across the country.
The festival will include the screening of films such as: Man on Ground, directed by award winning Akin Omotoso, Cry of Love, starring the legendary South African songbird Yvonne Chaka Chaka and award-winning actress Leleti Khumalo and African Metropolis, which was shot in seven African countries in seven cities, producing seven films by seven directors and seven crews to make this first of its kind African short film collection. Entrance to the festival is free and young people, especially those with interests in pursuing careers in filmmaking, are encouraged to attend.
Along with the screenings there will be a discussion session on the films screened, with an opportunity to provide feedback, as well as a how to enter the film industry session facilitated by the NFVF. Israel Makoe (iNumber Number, Hard to Get, Four Corner) and Ashifa Muleya (Elelwani) will be in attendance.
Taking films to all corners of the country is at the core of our strategy and initiatives like these enable us to achieve our goal. We are inviting all upcoming filmmakers in Polokwane, film consumers and students with interest in filmmaking to come and be part of the We Are Africa Polokwane Film Festival, says NFVF CEO Ms Zama Mkosi.
