Australians tuned in to SBS's linear TV and digital broadcasts in phenomenal numbers for Sunday morning's 2022 FIFA World CupTM matchup between Australia and Argentina, one of the most anticipated in contests of the tournament for local audiences to date.
The Socceroos' loss to the South Americans saw SBS draw an average audience of 1.7 million across linear television and digital. (See detailed breakdown below.) Total linear reached topped 2.15 million - SBS's second highest linear reach for 2022.
Australias dignified loss to Argentina on Sunday has delivered another excellent result for SBS, said Ken Shipp, Director of Sport. The World Cup is continuing to draw tremendous audiences and we are thrilled. Football is gaining momentum in Australia and audiences can't seem to get enough, particularly on our digital platform, SBS On Demand, where replays, mini matches and highlights are performing incredibly well.
The Socceroos may have bowed out with heads held high, but with many huge matches still to come, we think audience interest will remain strong.
TIMESLOT ANALYSIS:
Yesterday morning's match between Australia and Argentina was the second highest rated program on SBS's linear channel, drawing an average of 1.27 million viewers nationally.
A total of 424,000 live streamed the match via SBS On Demand.
Across SBS and SBS OnDemand the match drew an average audience of 1.7m viewers.
The match reached 2.15 million viewers on SBS's linear primary channel.
The match saw SBS achieve a 81.8% FTA share (metro) and a 68.1% (regional) for the time band.
SBS achieved a 16.5% all day FTA share (metro) on its primary channel and a network share of 20.5% (metro).
