Triggerfish Gets Special Recognition Award From Premier

The creators of animated feature films, Adventures in Zambezia and Khumba received an unexpected honour when Western Cape Premier, Helen Zille, presented the studio with a special recognition award for Global Reach at the Premier Entrepreneurship Recognition Awards recently held at the CTICC.

The category was created in recognition of the contribution that the animation studio, Triggerfish Animation, has made to create global awareness of South African products. The two films are among the highest grossing South African films of all time, and have released theatrically in almost every major market in the world, including Russia, China, France, Australia and the UK, collectively selling more than 9 million tickets at the box office.

We love the fact that around the world, millions of children are being exposed to South African culture in what may be their very first film at the cinema, says Triggerfish CEO, Stuart Forrest. These first impressions can have a favourable impact on the next generation of overseas tourists, investors and trading partners.

Zambezia and Khumba have competed exceptionally well in certain territories, including the Netherlands where the two films are now the two highest grossing independent animated films of all time in that territory. Both films were created with NFVF development and production funding, and were financed with the assistance of the IDC.

Triggerfish has a long-term vision to produce films that compete with the major US-based animation studios, and are in development on three new feature films and in production on a TV special, Stick Man, which will be screened on BBC1 for Christmas Day 2015.

The awards were handed out at a gala event at the Cape Town International Convention Centre by Western Cape Premier, Helen Zille, and Western Cape Minister of Economic Opportunities, Alan Winde.
