From December 2014 to February 2015, the global virtual reality (VR) community was asked by ZEISS to join in an open contest. The objective of the ZEISS VR ONE Contest was to demonstrate the great potential of virtual reality applications. More than 520 ideas were received. These ranged from games and fitness apps up to medical ideas. "The response was overwhelming," says ZEISS VR ONE Product Manager Franz Troppenhagen. "In addition to the numerous ideas, more than 1000 comments were posted to our contest page." Participants were invited to submit innovative ideas and visions as well as finished apps. The developers retain the rights in this open comeptition: "This was very important to us," adds Troppenhagen. A jury of international experts selected the winners in the Ideas and Apps categories. The Apps winners were officially honored yesterday at ZEISS headquarters in Oberkochen. In addition to the recognition and chance to work together in the future, the winners also received the ZEISS VR ONE and a smartphone or binoculars.
2015 app winners
First prize in the App category went to oddsheep, a start-up managed by Xavier Selva. Its Trinus VR app connects the smartphone to a computer via WiFi to utilize 3D PC software in the VR mode. In conjunction with the ZEISS VR ONE, this transforms PC games into a complete virtual experience. To activate the experience of PC games in VR mode, the video images are transmitted to the mobile device and the head tracking data is sent from the smartphone sensors to the PC. This generates an intensive VR experience. "This is a very promising app that has great potential: the intelligent combination of smartphone and PC computing power enables an exciting gaming experience with the ZEISS VR ONE," states Troppenhagen.
Second place in the App category went to Project Anywhere from Constantinos Miltiadis. This project creates a living experience in a virtual reality space. A camera detects the movement of a person and recreates it 1:1 in a virtual world. Supplemented by two data gloves, hand and finger movements are transferred to the virtual world and thus generates impressive interaction. "The goal of the project is to break from the physical presence of people by mixing kinesthetic, visual and audio elements with artificial sensual experiences," adds Troppenhagen. "The objective is to create a fully interactive and virtual environment."
A foundation for the future

The ZEISS VR ONE delivers brilliant optics to enable the use of virtual reality applications. The independence from end devices through the use of trays lays the foundation for the future," adds Troppenhagen.

The jury in the ZEISS VR ONE Contest was comprised of internationally recognized experts: Michael Gorman (USA),Editor-in-Chief of Engadget US; Gerfried Stocker (AUT), Head of and Artistic Director of Ars Electronica Centers; Professor Bernd Br gge (GER), Professor at the Technical University of Munich and Chair for Applied Software Technology; Dr. Markus Weber (GER), Head of Carl Zeiss Microscopy GmbH; Pascal Auberson (UK), Founder of Lumacode; and Yongtian Wang (CHN), Professor at the Beijing Institute of Technology.
