Sky sponsors Beyond Plastic' category at tve sustainability film awards

Sky is partnering with communications charity tve to launch a new Beyond Plastic' category at this year's tve Global Sustainability Film Awards together with Fastflow Group. Last year Sky News won the Press Association Award for Environmental Storytelling, for its documentary A Plastic Whale'.

John Ryley, Head of Sky News said: Every minute, the equivalent of a rubbish truck load of plastic goes into our oceans, it never decomposes and will remain there forever. If nothing changes, by 2050 all the plastic in the ocean could weigh more than all the fish. Our oceans' health affects us all so we need to come together to take action and protect our oceans.'

We're launching the Beyond Plastic' award amid growing international awareness about the catastrophic toll that non-biodegradable plastic pollution is having on our environment,' said Cheryl Campbell, executive director of tve. Sky News' Sky Ocean Rescue campaign, launched in January 2017, has played a significant part in that growing awareness so it is particularly appropriate that Sky is partnering with us to launch this new award.'

The 7th tve Global Sustainability Film Awards launched last week in the UK Pavilion at the Cannes Film Festival, and winners will be announced at BAFTA in London's Piccadilly on Monday 26 November. The Awards are tve's main fundraiser of the year.

Businesses and companies globally are invited to enter the Sky: beyond plastic' category. Films in this category will focus on companies which have eradicated or reduced plastic from their business model, companies at the cutting edge of creating alternatives to plastic, and those which are creating the technology to ensure all plastic is recyclable.

The Global Sustainability Film Awards launched in 2012. Claudine Blamey, head of sustainability and stewardship at The Crown Estate, is president of the 2018 Awards, which opened for entries on 11 May. It's an annual film competition for companies and institutions, recognising those whose films most powerfully portray solutions for sustainability. For the third year running it focuses on the UN Sustainable Development Goals, which set ambitious targets for world development: eradicating poverty and hunger; ensuring good health, quality education and gender equality; and setting targets for affordable and clean energy, climate action and responsible consumption and production.gsfa.tve.org
