Stronger International Focus

Further enhancing Screen Producers Australias strategic focus on international markets and developing business opportunities for Australian producers, we have established an office in Los Angeles, spearheaded by Simonne Overend, President of the LA-based Australians in Film.

This new strategic base was formally announced at the Producer's Guild of America's Produced By conference in Los Angeles held over the weekend by our CEO Matthew Deaner who led a trade delegation of more than 20 Australian screen producers to the Conference, the US's pre-eminent producer event.

Simonne will drive international delegations, speakers and participants for Screen Producers Australias SCREEN FOREVER annual conference, now entering its 30th year, and the Conferences International Partnership Market, as well as offering on-the-ground market intelligence to Screen Producer Australia members.

Simonne will also continue in to represent Australian production company Essential Media in the US.

This new US based representation for Screen Producers Australia reflects the growing focus of our members on the opportunities afforded by international markets to build co-productions and co-ventures, Mr Deaner said.

What's incredibly exciting for the Australian screen industry is that there is no longer a one-way pipeline from the US. More than ever, Australian production businesses are engaged successfully with the US and cracking the international TV market. These are smart Australian small businesses taking on the world's biggest entertainment market with a bold entrepreneurial spirit and business acumen.

A recent Screen Producers Australia survey of its members indicated that 48% percent of our members' companies are actively seeking international investment and a staggering 76% are actively developing co-productions.

Mr Deaner said that several Australian companies now have offices in North America, including Essential Media, Matchbox Pictures, Electric Pictures and Hoodlum, and that television series such as Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, Dr Blake, Top of the Lake, The Moodys, Offspring, Bondi Rescue, Wonderland, Wilfred, Secrets and Lies, Rake, The Code, Mako Mermaids, The Strange Calls, Dance Academy, Dennis the Menace, Wentworth, The Flamin' Thongs, Buzz Bumble, Review With Forrest McNeil and Nowhere Boys as well as the 30 year strong Neighbours have made their mark with international audiences delivering strong economic and soft diplomacy returns to Australia.

Mr Deaner said that this new representation in Los Angeles adds to Screen Producers Australia's recent work in the international arena, including MOUs signed with PACT (UK), PGA (US), CMPA (Canada) and CFPA (China) and an increased involvement by Screen Producers Australia members in the PGA conference. Mr Deaner is currently presenting at the BANFF World Media Festival in Canada, also attended by several Australian producers.
