College students can be particularly tough on the broadcast equipment they train on, but they should still learn with world-class tools. Thats the philosophy at St. Francis College in New York City, which has just acquired three Ikegami HDK-55 full digital HDTV cameras for their campus.
An institution of higher learning whose roots date back to 1859, Brooklyn-based St. Francis Colleges mission is to provide students in the NYC metropolitan area with the best possible education, at an outstanding value. As long time Ikegami users, St. Francis College recognized that the HDK-55 would be ideal for their busy HD studio.
Were always trying to plan for what our students will see when they graduate, says Lloyd Chris McNeil, Director of Support Services Group, Information Technology Department for St. Francis College. We already had Ikegami cameras in the building, and we were looking to increase the capabilities of what we could do. It was clear that the HDK-55 would give us the best possible quality image capture for producing video in-house.
Its important to us to provide a camera equivalent to what our graduates will find in a professional TV studio, adds Allen Burdowski, Dean for Academic Programs and Development at St. Francis College. The HDK-55 provides the best solution for us. The imagery is sharp and pure - its the extremely high level of performance wed expect from Ikegami.
The most affordable member of the Unicam HD camera series, the Ikegami HDK-55 uses 1080i 2.3 megapixels AIT CCDs. Like the other portable cameras in the Unicam HD series, the HDK-55 is a compact low-profile camera head with docking adaptor for fiber or triax cable use. The Systems Group of Hoboken, NJ, was the systems integrator on the project.
A quick learning curve was also a priority for the St. Francis College staff. The ease-of-use on the Ikegami HDK-55 is superb, says Burdowski. We also appreciated the on-site training supplied by Ikegami: Their field engineer took the time to help us thoroughly navigate the cameras capabilities. Learning the HDK-55s auto functions was particularly helpful - those are a big factor in helping our students to get up and running in a short amount of time.
The schools experience with Ikegami told them that their new cameras would excel in the particular rigors of academic life. In a teaching environment you dont have just one person using a camera - its constantly being handed off, McNeil notes. Students bang them around, push every button in sight, and subject them to anything you can imagine. Its a really challenging environment for keeping a camera operational, but weve seen that Ikegami cameras stand up to student use, year after year.
With three Ikegami HDK-55 full digital HD cameras on campus, St. Francis College is staying true to its educational mission. Our students are learning with what the pros use out in the field, Allen Burdowski says.
