Philips delivers the world's first mobile 3.0T Ingenia MRI to Medical Charity Cobalt in the UK -- -- -- --

Guildford, UK- Philips Healthcare, together with its approved partner Lamboo Mobile Medical, has delivered a mobile unit installed with a Philips Ingenia 3.0T MRI scanner to Cobalt. This is the world's first Ingenia 3.0T to be housed in a mobile unit.

Peter Sharpe, Chief Executive of Cobalt commenting on the significance of the new 3.0T Ingenia MRI unit says, This will provide NHS Trusts with very high image quality, increased functionality and the potential to increase patient throughput. The 3.0T Ingenia will not only provide routine MRI applications but also more specialist imaging in areas such as oncology, neuro and orthopaedic. The large 70cm bore, wider patient table and ambient light ring will help to increase patient comfort. The digital dStream with digitisation of the signal in the coil not only delivers superb image quality with higher SNR but shorter scan times and better patient throughput.

Philips dStream architecture has 3 components, DirectDigital RF, Philips exclusive receive technology, FlexStream workflow and EasyExpand to deliver clarity, speed and expandability. DirectDigital RF samples the MR directly in the coil, on the patient. The fibre-optic transmission of digital broadband from the coil to the image reconstructor removes potential noise influences typical of analog RF chains, resulting in up to forty percent higher Signal to Noise ratio enabling greater speed and resolution. FlexStream enables imaging with fewer coils and reduces setup time to improve workflow. The unique FlexCoverage Posterior coil provides neck-to-toe coverage without the need for any manual coil removal or patient repositioning. Philips EasyExpand, by moving digitisation inside the RF receive coils, means that the number of RF channels is no longer a system specification and enables plug-and-play expansion of clinical capabilities without major system changes. This upgradability of Ingenia means that it is forward compatible, and so helps to provide future proofing.

A registered charity, established nearly fifty years ago, Cobalt now has five Philips mobile MRI systems serving hospitals across the UK. Cobalt's state of the art imaging centre in Cheltenham also boasts the first independent 3.0T clinical MRI scanner, the first Philips Gemini GXL open PET/CT scanner and the first Panorama high-field open MRI scanner in the UK.

Over the years, Philips has worked closely with Cobalt, and together they have registered a number of firsts' including being the first in Europe to purchase a 1.5T mobile unit, first to put a 3.0T into a mobile in Europe and in November of last year, they became the world's first to have a Philips mobile Ingenia 1.5T with digital broadband technology.

Lamboo Mobile Medical, one of the main providers in the medical field of mobile and relocatable solutions, worked with Philips on the delivery of the Ingenia 1.5T unit using its sandwich technology'. The new 3.0T Ingenia has also been built according to the latest available technology and uses the same sandwich technology', providing many operational advantages. The state-of-the-art unit has also be designed to support high quality treatment for patients, maximum comfort for the staff and also fulfil Cobalt's green' objectives, with a unique chassis that uses less fuel during transportation.

Philips Healthcare and Lamboo Mobile Medical worked together to meet the challenges of putting the new Ingenia system into a mobile unit - challenges such as managing the distribution of weight across the vehicle. To help address this, Lamboo Mobile Medical has delivered the new Ingenia 3T unit in the first 3 axle mobile scanning vehicle in the world.
