Middle Eastern telecommunications operator Etisalat Group has signed a series of agreements with Huawei to cooperatively develop 5G telecom broadband services over the next five years. According to the companies, the first stage of trials, which will be conducted by a joint team, will be the first of their kind in the MENA region.
Etisalat and Huawei will also work together to provide ultra-fast fibre services, including a 40Gbps network, which will set the stage for better voice over IP, high-speed internet, and IPTV services. The fibre network project will be based on GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) technology, which will provide improved speed and bandwidth. Passive Optical Network technology uses point-to-multipoint fibre to the premises in which unpowered optical splitters are used to enable a single optical fibre to serve multiple premises.
At a recent roundtable of media executives, Etisalat's chief sales officer, Ayman Ibrahim El Dessouky (pictured) addressed the need to build mobility across different platforms: "Etisalat has been the pioneer in bringing customers the means to become more agile and responsive and help them leverage all the benefits of the mobility that the new multi-device environment can deliver. This is true both in terms of delivering the full range of managed cloud services and in respect to specific products that offer SMB customers the latest smart phones and tablets.
