Outstanding Softron Performance on Mac Pro Offers Transformative Potential

Ingest and playback performance with Softron solutions has taken a massive leap with the introduction of the new Mac Pro, making it possible for Softron-based businesses to achieve a dramatic increase in efficiency and throughput.

Softron has been testing a variety of Mac Pro configurations in different ingest and playback situations, to calibrate the performance gains that are possible. The Mac Pro's range includes versions with 4, 6, 8 or 12 processor cores, as well as powerful dual GPUs.

Our aim in initial testing has been to determine what all this phenomenal power means for ingest and playback performance, so that Softron customers can choose the right specification for the kind of throughput they want to achieve, said Daniel Tapie, CEO of Softron Media Services.

Ingest performance with MovieRecorder 2 takes full advantage of the Mac Pro's CPU muscle, achieving one HD 1080i Apple ProRes (LT) ingest per core. Simultaneous ingest of 8 1080i channels is easily achievable on a higher-spec machines, without approaching the limit of performance.

Playback with OnTheAir Video 3 exploits both CPU and GPU power, especially when using the software's SMART resize and graphics capabilities. CPU power is important for file decompression, making a higher specification a wise choice for 4K H.264 operations.

Resizing and graphics performance benefits from the Mac Pro's GPU, and running on the base-specification Dual D300 OnTheAir Video 3 was able to read ProRes LT files, resize and overlay a ticker, a still image, a clock and a rotating logo sourced a ProRes 4444 file - all at 4K output, and without taking the computer close to its limits. With the D700 - 8-Core configurations three more HD outputs could be achieved at the same time as the 4K output.

Performance on this scale is really big news for any image based business, and the Mac Pro doesn't even make any noise while delivering it. We strongly recommend Softron customers to test out the Mac Pro as soon as possible , said Daniel Tapie.
