Township drama tells stories SA can relate to

The township drama is currently in its fifth season, with the focus moving from Johannesburg to other parts of the country, like Cape Town. eKasi: Our Stories started from only five stories, and grew with a further 52 dramas in 2013. by Jerome Cornelius

The latest season will begin production from July 2014.

Crash and Burn tells the story that, Hendricks says, might be familiar to many who live on the Cape flats, an area notorious for gangsterism and drug abuse.

Hendricks says that his character, Jermaine, saw the effect of violence and how it affects the lives of others. He had the picture perfect life, far removed from his life, doing well for himself.

One day he meets someone from his past who is now a gangster.

Jermaine's life spirals out of control after he wins money while gambling.

Hendricks drew on his own experiences growing up in Retreat where a drug dealer lived down the road.

You can see gradual changes in people when they are on drugs. He used his personal experiences in seeing how these people change. said Hendricks.

Hendricks wanted to be an actor since the age of five.

He has been modelling full time since 2007. He is excited about his debut performance and said that viewers haven't seen anything like it yet.

His character uses drugs and sleeps with a prostitute.

Monde Twala, head of channels division at eTV said: The eKasi: Our Stories series has shown a steady growth since it launched in 2009.

He said that Through the series ordinary South Africans have been given a platform to tell authentic stories which celebrate diverse experiences.

A solid foundation has been set for more compelling and entertaining stories to be told. said Monde.

From the trailer alone, Hendricks has landed an audition for a new lifestyle TV show, which he will go to Botswana to film. Earl says that there is no show on TV where coloured people anchor shows and that there is a gap in the market for this type of thing.

He is grateful for the opportunity and says eKasi gave me the confidence and credibility to do this.

The next set of new episodes of season five start on Monday, April 7 at 9pm.
