The 2018/19 season of the Absa Premiership won't go down in the annals of PSL history as one of best the league has seen but it could still prove to be a record-breaking season for Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns or whoever lifts the trophy.
The record in question is one teams might not necessarily set out to achieve, the lowest points total to win the Premier Soccer League title.
Currently the honour belongs to Supersport United who won the title in 2007/08 with a meagre 54 log points, the side, then coached by current Bidvest Wits boss Gavin Hunt, went on to win the title again the following year with a total of just 55 points.
Orlando Pirates currently top the PSL table having gathered 50 points from 27 matches, while Sundowns are just three points behind with a game in hand on their Gauteng rivals.
In a season that has seen *70 draws already it is not inconceivable that neither Pirates nor Sundowns could crack the 54 point mark that currently holds the record, and still win the title.
Pitso Mosimane was ready to write off Sundowns chances of winning the title last week but a win over Baroka FC away from home has put the Brazilians right back in the race.
Against Sundowns is the impending judgement of the League against the club for fielding an ineligible player against Wits during the first half of the season. That match ended in a 1-1 draw but Sundowns could be docked three points for the offense, three points that might just decide the title.
Pirates coach Milutin Sredojevi has cut a frustrated figure at the helm of the Buccaneers this season, often bristling at the suggestion that his team has been prone to lapses in concentration and intensity. They made a good start to the season but their involvement in the Caf Champions League contributed to a failure to find rhythm in the league.
Sundowns and Pirates lead a pack of six teams that can still mathematically win the league which concludes on 11 May 2019.
