KCETLink Commemorates the 50 Anniversary of Dr. Kings Historic Speech on Washington with Riveting Documentaries and Web Content

Burbank, Calif. - Aug.12, 2013 - KCETLink will commemorate the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.s historic I Have a Dream speech with three extraordinary films that explore the legacy of Dr. King and the civil rights movement, complemented by exclusive web content that offers insight into his impact on equality today.

Building the Dream, a touching and revealing documentary, offers unique insight into the challenges faced -- and overcome -- in the 27-year effort to create a national memorial to Martin Luther King, Jr. Interviews with Bill Clinton, Colin Powell, Andrew Young, John Lewis, John Warner, Connie Morella, John Sarbanes, King family members, and more, tell the story of the Memorial from conception to completion. Airs Monday, Aug. 26 at 4 p.m. PDT, 7 p.m. EST on Link TV and 8 p.m. PDT on KCET.

In contrast, A Ripple of Hope tells the dramatic story of the night Dr. King was assassinated in 1968, as Robert F. Kennedy was scheduled to appear in an African-American neighborhood as part of his run for the Democratic presidential nomination. Upon hearing the tragic news, Kennedy was forced to make a crucial decision: Should he venture into the heart of Indianapolis to talk to the potentially volatile crowd? What could he say that would assuage their grief? Should he defy the city officials who ordered him to stay away? Would his life be in danger? By keeping his promise to speak to the crowd, viewers learn that Kennedy was able to help the city avert the violence that swept the rest of the country and make a profound statement about American race relations. Airs Aug. 26 at 9 p.m. on KCET.

Finally, Link TVs original production, Speaking Out for Justice with Harry Belafonte will be offered as part of the Link TV line-up around the historic event. In this riveting speech, entertainer and social activist Belafonte speaks about the growing crisis of youth incarceration in the U.S. and recalls conversations with Dr. King during the civil rights movement about the struggle for equality. Airs Aug 26 at 5 p.m. PDT and 8 p.m. EST with encore airings on Aug 28 at 10 a.m. PDT and 1 p.m. EST, and Aug. 29 at 10:30 PDT and 1:30 a.m. EST on Link TV.
