Aiming to conserve biodiversity through environmental analysis surrounding telecommunication sites and participation in the ANEMONE Consortium
KDDI Corporation
December 4,2023
-- On December 4, 2023, KDDI released the TNFD Report 2023 v1 (hereinafter,
this report (1.2MB)), which presents KDDIs approach to natural capital and biodiversity in accordance with the TNFD Final Recommendations v1.0 [
1] published by the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (hereinafter, TNFD). [
2]
KDDI will proactively disclose information through releasing this report and working to reduce business risks and create business opportunities, aiming to resolve issues related to the preservation of biodiversity.
Main content of this report: Environmental analysis and assessment surrounding telecommunication sites From August 28 to November 20, 2023, KDDI analyzed the environment surrounding telecommunication sites, including base stations and data centers operated by KDDI, to estimate and assess the distribution of invasive alien and rare species of plants and to identify sites where priority action should be considered (hereafter referred to as this analysis). We plan to conduct a field survey of the identified sites to check plant habitats.
This analysis was conducted using BiomeViewer, a biodiversity visualization service provided by Biome Inc. (HQ: Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture. CEO: Shogoro Fujiki)
To accelerate the KDDI Groups biodiversity initiatives, KDDI and KDDI Smart Drone, and KDDI Research Inc., joined the AMENOME Consortium [
3] in November 2023 and January 2023 respectively. The aim of the consortium is to create a society that lives in harmony with nature using ANEMONE, a large-scale environmental DNA observation network originating in Japan. The KDDI Group plans to leverage its assets to promote biodiversity preservation initiatives, including developing a drone system for environmental DNA surveys.
TNFD is an international organization that aims to develop a framework for companies to disclose how nature-related risks and opportunities impact their finances. It urges companies and financial institutions to report on natural capital information in support of a shift in global financial flows away from nature-negative outcomes and toward nature-positive ones.
In November 2023, KDDI registered as a TNFD Adopter to declare its intention to be a company that promotes disclosure in line with the TNFD Recommendations. We will continue to enhance our information transparency in the future.

How the TNFD was established Today, moves from the global initiative TNFD, which was established following the Taskforce on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), are accelerating to develop a risk management and disclosure framework for organizations to report on nature-related dependency, impact, risks, and opportunities.
TNFD is a global initiative that develops and provides a framework for managing nature-related risks and opportunities and for disclosing such information. It was established in September 2020 by the British NGO Global Canopy, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP,) the United Nations Environment-Finance Initiative (UNEP-FI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). It aims to urge corporations and financial institutions to report on nature-related information so that the action will result in a shift in global financial flows away from nature-negative outcomes and toward nature-positive ones.
About the ANEMONE Consortium The ANEMONE Consortium is an organization that aims to create a society that lives in harmony with nature using ANEMONE (All Nippon eDNA Monitoring Network), a Japan-originated network for biodiversity observation using environmental DNA. This platform enables individuals from different fields, such as industry, government, academia, and the private sector, to unite, engage in collaborative efforts, and share information. Its main goal is to facilitate the development of environmental DNA observation, related technology research, and the implementation and dissemination of these technologies in practical applications.
