Formula E Crosses the Finish Line of Inaugural Season

The FIA Formula E Championship concludes its spectacular inaugural racing season this weekend, with two races on a 17-turn, 2.9km track situated in the heart of London. Will Nelson Piquet, driving for NEXTEV TCR, maintain his position at the top of the standings and create history by winning the first ever championship?

The FIA Formula E Series is the first fully electric single-seater championship and has been an exciting addition to the world of motor racing. Ten teams, twenty drivers and forty Spark-Renault SRT 01E electric vehicles have been put through their paces around challenging city centre circuits located around the world, including the Olympic Village in Beijing, the Kremlin in Moscow and the streets of Monaco. The championships key goal is to generate excitement in and push forward the technical capabilities of electric vehicles, clean energy and sustainability.

Of course, no top racing series televised coverage can be complete without on-board car images that bring the excitement of Point Of View pictures to the viewer. To capture the very best action Formula E chose to commission a tailor-made transmission solution from Vislink. The system provides the ability for each car to carry up to four of Vislinks own specifically designed HDMC cameras, mounted at any of ten positions on the cars, connected a customise H.264 wireless control units.

The entire installation has been designed and proven to withstand the extreme and challenging conditions presented during street circuit racing, whilst providing the highest quality uninterrupted footage. The entire on-board system is controlled and monitored using Vislinks unique software suite, developed in collaboration with motorsport customers over a number of years. Pit Lane radio camera systems are also provided by Vislink, with all the radio camera and on-board feeds being received via Vislinks MDR fibre optic media based circuit reception system.

Developing the on-board system for Formula E presented some unique engineering challenges and provided an excellent opportunity to collaborate with the FIA, Spark-Renault and Formula E engineering teams to develop the best possible solution.
