e Peacock by Yang Liping to be staged in Ningbo on Oct 5 & 6

Since late 2012, the Peacock , the latest masterpiece of Yang Liping, a famous peacock dancer, has been amongst the most popular plays in China.

And now, from 5th and 6th October, the dancer will stun audiences with the delicate masterpiece in the Ningbo Cultural Plaza Grand Theatre.

Yang struggled a great deal in her early performing career as she was considered not to have an appropriate physique for ballet, which at the time was regarded as the most basic dancing form. However, she didn't give up, and instead played to her strengths, creating and honing the peacock dance which made her famous.

The foundation of her performance lies in her hands, which she shapes into a vivid peacock head complete with beak, eyes and feathers. She makes full use of her wrists, palms, fingers and even nails as she dances.

According to Yang, she has to stick to a strict diet in order to keep the boney outline of her hands and her skinny figure. It is my professional duty to maintain my figure. She said.

Apart from the dance, the classic drama Five Stories by Lao She adapted from the famous modern writer Lao She, will be staged on 15th Oct in the Theatre. The drama is directed by Lin Zhaohua and stars Li Chengru and Lei Gesheng.
