Short film Ear, Air, Fire, Water shows off stunning high frame rate capability of Sonys PMW-F55 camera

Steve Lawes, the first person in Europe to use Sonys F55 when it launched, commented: Having put the F55 through its paces before, I was delighted to find that the firmware upgrade hasnt affected the cameras usability at all. The most pleasing thing to see was that the camera still shoots full sensor, so the image isnt cropped in any way and the shot we were getting didnt change at all when we switched the frame rate up. This is incredibly useful for filmmakers, as it means theres no need to change the lens or perspective, and you can continue shooting as normal.

Director Martin Scanlan commented, After directing the first film shot using the F55, Dig, with Steve last year, I was keen to test out the creative possibilities enabled by high frame rate shooting. The excellent image quality achieved through shooting in 2K was striking, as it allowed us to pick up on the smallest details and nuances in our shots, from the gradual change in expression of our characters to the gentle fluttering of blades of grass the overall impact was beautiful, cinematic footage, with a natural aesthetic.

The Sony F5 and F55 offer multi-codec support and feature a super 35mm 4K image sensor, delivering stunning images and unprecedented creative options, making the cameras ideal for high-end drama and commercial productions while opening up ultra-high resolution acquisition for broadcasters and production companies. The new firmware upgrade enables high frame rate shooting in 2K, as well as 24p shooting in 4K RAW for both the F5 and F55, and shooting XAVC 4K 4:2:2 for the F55. Version 2.0 firmware will be available from the end of September 2013.
