Barry and June Steenkamp speak in a world exclusive to Good Morning Britain
We were disappointed in her [Judge Masipa] judgement because she only had certain facts before her
We may not feel that justice has been done but we've just got accept what the judge decided, that's the law
We will see her again one day when we are in the same place
Following yesterday's sentencing of Oscar Pistorius, Reeva Steenkamp's parents, Barry and June Steenkamp, spoke to Good Morning Britain this morning in a world exclusive.
Speaking the Susanna Reid and John Stapleton, the Steenkamp's outlined at that although they have forgiven and accepted the sentence delivered, they still feel there is more to the story than has been told - facts only Oscar Pistorius knows.
JOHN STAPLETON: Are you still convinced that the punishment fits the crime?
JUNE STEENKAMP: Yes, certainly, we're very settled with the sentence. He's got to pay for what he's done. It's not that we want vengeance or anything or him to suffer with his disabilities, but at the same time we feel satisfied that he will realise now that you can't go around doing things like that.
JS: This is the man who killed or daughter, and according to some reports, he could be out of prison in 10 months time
JUNE STEENKAMP: Yes but we are still satisfied with the sentence. I feel that Reeva was only made visible by my niece, who made her visible again by what she said, she said, that you know, how much we love Reeva. But we don't want revenge, we want a fair punishment under the circumstances on his disabilities. We wouldn't have wanted him to go to jail and be abused and I feel that he will realise that he can't go around doing that. He can't kill somebody like that.
SUSANNA REID: Barry, I wonder if you've seen the broader public reaction to the sentencing because there are a number of people who think perhaps it wasnt long enough - do you share your wife's feelings?
BARRY STEENKAMP: We have gone along with the judge and her decision. Only Oscar knows whether that sentence is acceptable to him, Ive got my feelings to the whole thing but we do accept what the judge handed down.
JS: June - did you ever accept his argument that this was a terrible mistake?
JUNE: No - there's more to the whole story than everybody knows, only Oscar knows
SR: How would you describe the relationship between your daughter and Oscar Pistorius?
BARRY: We knew very little about the relationship. I'm sure it was coming to a head where our daughter would have spoken to us about it at a later stage but we, ourselves, knew very little about the relationship between Oscar and our daughter Reeva.
JS: Evidence was given in court June, at one stage, in which your daughter said there were times when she was scared of Oscar - were you ever aware of that?
JUNE: Exactly - yes, that was read out in the court and she described exactly how she felt and that he wasn't treating her properly, he was always irritable with her and snapped quickly, so we know all of that so that's why we feel that it is not actually what happened.
JS : But you didn't know that before the court case?
JUNE: Yes, and we were disappointed in her [Judge Masipa's] judgement because she only had certain facts before her, she only had certain facts that she had to base her decision on, so maybe there were not enough facts when she made her summation maybe the facts of the law, there weren't enough to come to any other conclusion but we were disappointed at that stage - even shocked about that.
JS: If they did appeal this case, how would you feel about that?
JUNE: I think that the law must take its course and we have to accept what's happened and if there is an appeal, well there's an appeal, there's nothing that we can change about that but it will be difficult to go on even further again - we may not feel that justice has been done but we've just got to accept what the judge decided, that's the law, and although it could've been completely different if her decision was different, not everybody is entirely happy, but the facts she had before her maybe weren't enough.
Speaking again to the couple later in the programme. ..
SR: We spoke to you an hour ago and a number of people have been struck by the compassion you have shown this morning for Oscar Pistorius - do you feel satisfied about what happened yesterday and what's happening to him?
JUNE: When you say satisfied the main thing is that he has had to go to jail now and he's incarcerated in jail and he will now realise he will suffer but I think more mental pain than anything. I think he has lost everything but now he has to pay for what he has done to our daughter and no words can actually describe what that has done to us but we have to live with this now for the rest of our lives without her and it's so difficult to go through this and to have that pain in your heart and in your soul for her. We will see her again one day when we are in the same place but still, there's a great, great empty space for us and it's very hard. But I think where Oscar's concerned he has to pay for what he's done. He actually did do it and did kill her and he admitted he did that and even though we are not completely happy with the evidence that actually came through, there is a big missing piece of the puzzle that we still feel that there is more to the whole story than actually was stated.
JS: You can never forget what happened to your daughter, but can you ever find it in your heart to forgive?
JUNE: I've already forgiven a long time ago. If you don't forgive you're going to carry in your heart too much you don't want revenge, there's too much damage done to you as a person, you c
