Fifa World Cup results in mass live streaming piracy --

Viaccess-Orca, a company which protects and enhances content services, has compiled piracy data taken over the 32 day duration of the Fifa World Cup using their Eye on Piracy software. The results indicate that approximately 20 million people viewed games illegally via unauthorised streams and websites.

The software is able to monitor live video internet re-streaming by detecting streams suspected of piracy, observing the content and then sending takedown notices to pirate site owners.

The data shows that sixty percent of football viewers watched at least one game online, with streaming numbers increasing over afternoon matches which is when the majority of European audiences were at work.

Activity on social media surrounding the event was at a record high with 618,725 tweets being sent out per minute. But according to software results, social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter played their role in the piracy movement as they were used by some groups and links.

Based on these results Viaccess-Orca has suggested that, in order to meet viewership demands, content rights holders should consider making legal streaming services widely available in order to capitalise on subscriber viewing flexibility.
