Sharjah Ruler's Decision to Set Up Museums Authority...

Senior officials of the Sharjah Museums Authority, previously the Sharjah Museums Department, have lauded the decision of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohamed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, to establish the Sharjah Museums Authority, stressing that the move would bolster and complement the cultural project that Sharjah has been working on for over three decades.

The officials affirmed that the Emiri Decree No. 64 of 2017 issued by to upgrade the Sharjah Museums Department into an authority that enjoys legal entity and full capacity to carry out the steps and actions that are necessary to achieve its objectives will provide a more comprehensive tool for taking the museum experience in the Emirate to the next level. This experience has been an integral part of education, culture and heritage, as well as of the process of raising new generations and improving their skills, and therefore essential to the developmental boom witnessed in Sharjah and the entire UAE.

Manal Ataya, Director General of the Sharjah Museums Authority, expressed her gratitude to His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah for his continuous follow-up and promotion of culture and education in the Emirate. She also thanked His Highness for the special attention he pays to museums in the Emirate out of his belief in their vital role in community education and his relentless efforts to upgrade the overall museum experience in the Emirate.

We congratulate all those who have been working at the Emirate's various museums on the issuance of this Emiri decree, which takes us great strides forward and presents us with greater challenges to improve our knowledge, particularly with the tremendous progress in the museum sector and expansion of their services to accommodate more categories of society, she said.

We at the Sharjah Museums Authority are proud of our achievements. These include our organisation of top international exhibitions in Sharjah and our provision of diverse educational programmes that contribute to creating an informed society of the significance of museums. Over the past 11 years, the Authority has grown to employ more than 500 people and has been working to encourage Emirati cadres to follow a career in the cultural sector.

The Director General of the Sharjah Museums Authority invited all Sharjah museums staff to work hard to make the Authority's new experience a success. She said: We will continue to pursue and achieve the vision of the Authority towards further development and creativity and a brilliant future.

Aisha Dimas, Director of Executive Affairs at the Sharjah Museums Authority, also hailed the establishment of the Sharjah Museums Authority, stressing that it demonstrates the success of the museum experience in the Emirate.

The Sharjah Museums Authority accommodates 16 museums, each with a variety of collections, thanks to His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohamed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. These collections cover a variety of disciplines, including heritage, contemporary arts and science, in addition to the history of Sharjah and the region. They also serve as rich resources for anyone interested in enriching their knowledge and educational experience.

His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah is an all-time advocate for education and our museums attest to this fact, which makes us more determined to work harder to turn museums into a scientific, educational and knowledge experience that forms part of Sharjah's cultural project, said the Executive Director of Sharjah Museums Authority.

Nasser Al Darmaki, Director of Museums Development Department at the Sharjah Museums Authority, said the Authority is preparing for another unique experience that will place museums in Sharjah at the forefront of cultural fields that recognise their pivotal role in knowledge and educational development.

He added: The establishment of the Sharjah Museums Authority will undoubtedly contribute to achieving our goal of forming a cultural platform that promotes the identity of Sharjah locally and internationally and helps create a conscious society of the importance of museums as an attractive and enjoyable cultural and educational destination.
