The lights and sights of Las Vegas will be front and center at this weekend's F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix and one of the big visual elements will be Samsung displays on the permanent pit building which has been constructed just off the iconic Las Vegas Strip. A massive rooftop display (481 feet wide by 109 feet top to bottom) in the shape of the F1 logo as well as displays on the side of the escalator (that display is 72 26 feet) and three grandstand displays are permanently installed, and Ross gear will be at the center of powering them not only for the Grand Prix but week in and week out.

The rooftop display on the F1 pit building goes from artist renditions to real-world activation this weekend.

Matt Bukas, Ross Video, manager, solution architects, says the unique dimensions of the display on the roof required the LED cabinets to be mounted in landscape mode and then, because the logo has curves in it, offset and staggered.

Because its different versus just stacking the displays on top of each other there was some concern as to how to program video and graphics, says Bukas. So, Samsung did a test with our XPression system and saw it has the ability to rotate the images as well as render every pixel to be wherever they want it.

It shows the power of XPression Tessera, as there will be multiple machines generating content and all the machines will be frame accurate with each other, says Bukas. Dialing the rooftop display in was the biggest challenge but we're 100 percent commissioned now.

A Ross Carbonite Mosaic is also on hand for low-latency video processing for the grandstand displays.

We want to keep that latency down as much as we can for the fans and then everything is tied together with the Ultrix routing platform, says Bukas.

A proof of concept was done at the Samsung headquarters in Logan, Utah, with Bukas and the Samsung team reconfiguring the wall a number of times to be confident that it would be up to the task without any surprises.

The Paddock facility will be lit up and activated year round, he adds. They'll be using our system almost as a media player for most of the year with things like Holiday content reels.

For race week, however, Bukas as well as Ross Video Manager, Solutions Specialists Andrew Lahey and Drew Shealy, content and workflow specialist, are on site, with Shealy at the helm from the opening ceremony on Wednesday through race day.

All the content that you'll see on the rooftop will be coming from our system and we're also producing the content for the opening ceremony with all the bands and driver intros so we're working on that right now with the Las Vegas Grand Prix marketing and creative team, says Bukas. After Effects templates have helped the marketing and creative team provide content in the correct format. The rooftop display will also feature things like fastest lap and other dynamic content to inform race fans of accomplishments and more.
