Creating New Business Models
KDDI CORPORATION
December 16,2020
-- KDDI, together with Amazon Web Services, Inc., has announced that AWS Wavelength, which enables seamless access to cloud services, optimized for multi-access computing applications within the au 5G network, will be available in Tokyo starting on December 16, 2020.
By placing AWS computing and storage services within au 5G network and processing data, AWS Wavelength reduces latency by more than half compared to 4G, enabling ultra-low latency. This characteristic of 5G is ideal for customers exploring new business opportunities offered by 5G. In addition, application developers can deploy next-generation applications and services using the same familiar APIs, tools, and features as AWS.
With this ultra-low latency service, many customers will be able to experience new services using 5G, such as the development and provision of high quality, interactive cloud gaming services in the gaming industry, and the provision of high-quality 4K/8K video streaming services in the entertainment industry.
In preparation for the launch of AWS Wavelength, KDDI, together with the following partners, conducted a demonstration experiment and confirmed its effectiveness as expected.

AWS Wavelength is one of the initiatives under the KDDI Accelerate 5.0 initiative, which uses 5G to accelerate the realization of Society 5.0, a sustainable, consumer-centered society that balances economic development and the resolution of social issues.
KDDI is accelerating its efforts to promote digital transformation (DX) for its customers through the utilization of au 5G, and with AWS Wavelength, KDDI is working to create a resilient society that will enable the establishment of new lifestyles for consumers and the resolution of Japans economic development and social issues.

Demonstration Experiment 1. TVT (Game production company)
(1)
Purpose and Implementation
In network gaming, the network quality between server and client is a major constraint not only in development and operation, but also in game design. In this experiment, we tested the network quality and the game experience improvement by using 5G and AWS Wavelength through a live video streaming application with a mini-game that allows viewers to play against each other.
(2)
Results
In the experimental environment, the RTT (round trip time) of terminals connected to a 5G network, was reduced by 40-50% compared to that of a 4G network. As a result, the 5G client was able to achieve smoother rendering and a better gaming experience.
The widespread use of such a low-latency communication environment will ease the constraints of networked games and increase the freedom of game design, which in turn will improve the experience for game players.
2. HIOKI E.E. CORPORATION (Electrical measuring instrument manufacturer)
(1)
Purpose and Implementation
Measurement of physical quantities (e.g., voltage, current, power, vibration, etc.) at remote locations is usually done using a GPS-based accurate time distribution mechanism, but there are challenges such as the preparation of dedicated circuitry and the limitation of installation locations. In this experiment, we performed a demonstration experiment to measure the time synchronization accuracy of IoT devices by synchronizing time from multiple IoT devices to servers deployed in AWS Wavelength.
(2)
Results
By synchronizing with AWS Wavelengths servers, a time synchronization of approximately 2 milliseconds was achieved, which is accurate enough to measure the characteristics of commercial power supplies used in electrical equipment. In addition, the consistent, low-latency performance of au 5G and AWS Wavelength allows for simultaneous measurements over wide areas, which will be useful for power quality investigations and electrical facility maintenance over large areas.
3. Brains Technology (IT solution company)
(1)
Purpose and Implementation
There are challenges in the implementation of AI on premise (in-house) in terms of procurement of learning infrastructure and network configuration design with business and technical requirements. In this experiment, we have conducted a demonstration of predicting failures of manufacturing equipment using AI based on various sensor data in an AWS Wavelength environment.
(2)
Results
Low-latency inference processing and the cloud technology necessary for learning was confirmed, especially in latency, which was about 43% better than 4G. Low latency in au 5G network will lead to quick anomaly determination and decision-making, and we believe that there are high expectations for future commercialization.
4. Nippon Television (Broadcasting company)
(1)
Purpose and Implementation
The challenge in the program production process is that it takes time to convert the format of the recording media and transporting them to another location. This time, we conducted a demonstration experiment of access to the editing system in the cloud using au 5G and AWS Wavelength. We were looking for a way to upload the footage to the cloud and edit it there. Using au 5G network and AWS Wavelength, we experimented of accessing video-editing systems in the cloud.
