ales awarded Ottawa line signalling contract

Thales will supply its world-leading Communications-Based Train Control (SelTrac CBTC) system technology for the new Ottawa Light Rail Transit (LRT), the Confederation Line. Thales will design, build, maintain the systems, and support its installation and commissioning.

The Ottawa east-west Confederation Line' is 12.5 km long and serves 13 stations. It is scheduled to open in 2018 and will be designed and built by the Rideau Transit Group consortium. The CBTC system is semi-automated, which includes automatic train supervision and protection technology to assist drivers with safe and reliable operation. The train storage yard will be fully automated allowing driverless capability.

Following the early adoption of Thales's revolutionary CBTC technology on the Toronto SRT and Vancouver SkyTrain Expo Line in 1985, Thales has led the charge globally to change the way signalling is perceived and applied to urban rail networks to deliver greater operational performance while improving safety and reliability. In Canada over the years, Thales added SkyTrain's Millennium and Canada Lines and is now working on Edmonton Transit's North LRT and Vancouver's Evergreen Line.

Thales SelTrac CBTC system has been proven worldwide on over 55 projects to date and operates on over 1,300 km of track in major urban centers around the world, carrying an estimated 3 billion passengers annually.
