The AI Discussion will Mature

Anyone walking the halls of NAB, IBC or any other expo in 2018 will have become amused or possibly bemused at how every company had somehow become an AI company overnight. AI for many was just another way of saying we have a computer program that helps you do your job! Hmmm. Not really a good definition of AI ! But where AI was new and exciting was where it could do automated editing, automated workflow or, in the case of storage, advanced image recognition. Advanced image recognition unlocks archives for reuse and monetisation. That points to archives on spinning disk rather than archives sat on tapes on a shelf. But however cool that concept is the fact remains that advanced image recognition is still very CPU intensive and expensive to perform. Reality check: most of us won't be doing AI image recognition in 2019.

The Prediction

AI won't disappear, it will only get better, but at most storage and media vendors will stop throwing around the almost meaningless term AI . Thank goodness.
