DJ'ing goes digital with MWM Phase

Finally - DJs can work digitally, but without losing the feel of real decks

Music World Media have started shipping the Phase. First exhibited as a protoype at NAMM in 2018, Phase is a ingenious system that tracks the rotation of vinyl decks and converts the motion into controller data, which is then used to regulate DVS mixer hardware or computer-based DJ/playback systems such as Serato, Rekordbox or Traktor.

The upshot of this is that DJs can play, backspin and scratch with completely ordinary decks, with all the familiar feel of a standard record on a deck, and audio playback will precisely track the motion of the decks, which are reduced to physical controllers. The needles don't even have to be touching the records, or can be removed from the decks' tone arms altogether. DJs no longer have to walk gingerly near their decks for fear of making the needles skip, nor do they have to worry about sub-bass from club PA speakers throwing' their decks.

Fitting the wireless transmitter to a deck is as easy as putting on a record. Magnetic pads hold the transmitter in place.

The key to the system is the Remote, a small wireless transmitter about the size of a USB stick with a hole in it, which is slipped over the spindle of a deck (see above). It wirelessly transmits the deck motion data to the Phase Receiver (which also doubles as a dock/ charger for the Remotes when they are not in use - see below), and thence to the DJ's digital playback system.

The Phase Receiver also doubles as a charger for the Remotes.

Phase retails in two packages: Phase Essential contains a single Phase receiver and two Phase Remotes and costs around £270 in the UK$399.99, while Phase Ultimate contains an additional pair of Remotes that can be recharging on the Receiver while the other pair is in use. The Ultimate package costs around £470 in the UK$599.99.
