The Bioscope Independent Cinema, situated in Johannesburg s eclectic urban Maboneng Precinct, presents a number of films and events for moviegoers to attend in March.

Oberhausen on Tour

Outstanding films which featured as part of the 2013 Oberhausen International Short Film Festival, will screen from 13 to 15 March at 19h30.

The programme will run as follows:

13 March at 19h30: German Programme

14 March at 19h30: International Programme

15 March at 20h00: Best of the Artist Film and Video selection

Documentary Screenings

2 Men and a Wedding: A story of two men who endure 14 years of imprisonment and fight for their rights and dignity as gay men living in Malawi, Africa. The film sheds light on countries such as Burundi, Sudan, Nigeria and Uganda, where homosexuality is considered a criminal offence; and in some incidences is punishable by death.

Screenings will take place on 12 and 18 March at 19h00.

How to Survive a Plague: A 2013 Oscar-nominated film which portrays the actions of HIV-positive self-made activists who were able to help find and approve the use of new drugs to combat the AIDS epidemic.

A screening will take place on 21 March at 19h30.

KiezKino Cinema Series Launch

Drawing on the concept of KiezKino or neighbourhood cinema, a new monthly event hosted in partnership with the Goethe-Institut in Johannesburg will feature at The Bioscope, with the aim to encourage interest in German cinema.

Alice in den St dten (Alice in the Cities) by Wim Wenders will be the first in a series of archived films to screen. The movie features the story of a writer who helps a girl locate her grandmother in Germany.

The event takes place on 25 March at 19h30 and tickets are available for R15.

If I Owned a Cinema

Shane Durrant, the frontman for South African band Desmond and The Tutus presents the film of his choice, Space Jam. The movie stars Michael Jordan who agrees to help a number of Looney Toons characters play a basketball game and win their freedom against aliens.

The screening will take place on 19 March at 19h30. Reservations can be made by purchasing a R20 drink voucher online.

The standard ticket price for screenings is R40 unless otherwise stated.
