KCET TO AIR SPECIAL PROGRAMMING FOR THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF 9/11 BEGINNING SEPT. 7 AT 8 PM
Internationally Acclaimed Author Reza Aslan to Anchor SoCal Connected/Global Watch Special In The Shadow of 9/11
Additional Programming Includes Documentaries From the Ground Up and War Stories from Ward 7-D and full coverage from international news partners BBC, Al-Jazeera, and NHK.
Los Angeles - August 25, 2011 - As the nation prepares to mark the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, KCET, the nations largest independent public television station serving Southern and Central California, remembers the victims with a week of distinctive local and international programming, including In the Shadow of 9/11, a special presentation of SoCal Connected/Global Watch airing on Sept. 7 at 8 p.m., Sept. 9 at 8 p.m. and Sept. 11 at 8 p.m. The program will also be streamed live, and available for viewing at www.kcet.org.
Marking the premiere of SoCal Connecteds fourth season, In the Shadow of 9/11 explores the local impact of the 2001 terrorist attacks. Judy Muller investigates the state of our national security, examining LAX the Port of Los Angeles; Brian Rooney looks at the critical role California has played in Iraq and Afghanistan; and Michael Okwu reports on the rise of Islamophobia across the U.S. In addition, Global Watch anchor Reza Aslan (bestselling author of No God, but God: The Origin of Evolution, and The Future of Islam) will lead a panel discussion about terrorist threats, the future of our military, and how weve changed as a nation.
We want to provide viewers with more than images of the falling towers, said Bret Marcus, executive producer of SoCal Connected and chief content officer for KCET. The special will shed light on enduring issues that affect Southern Californians and the country since the attack.
Directly following at 9 p.m. on Sept. 7, KCET will air From the Ground Up a powerful documentary, which chronicles the inspirational story of five FDNY widows 10 years after 9/11 who triumphed in spite of tragedy. Maureen, single with two autistic sons, creates a foundation and two group homes for autistic children; Una, builds a library to show her children goodness in life; Andrea travels to Rwanda to help, but finds strength in the dignity of thousands of Rwandan widows; Sally, and her in-laws begin a race that raises almost $10 million to help orphans and vets. Forged by fire, these women look ahead with hope and love.
Finally, the duPont-Columbia award-winning War Stories from Ward 7-D will air Sept. 7 at 9:30 p.m. This special program is a sobering report on the range of brain injuries caused by improvised explosive devices (IED) in Iraq. Focusing on four soldiers recovering at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Palo Alto, the program reveals that traumatic brain injuries, very difficult to diagnose, have become the signature injury of the Iraq conflict.
KCETs 9/11 programming also offers viewers full coverage from its international news partners Al Jazeera English, BBC News, and Japanese public broadcaster NHK during regular news block schedule.
Included in the international coverage, KCET will air NHKs special 9/11 report that parallels the Japanese American internment experience during World War II with todays discrimination against Muslim Americans.
I think viewers will appreciate an international perspective with which to remember this national tragedy with exceptional coverage from around the globe, Marcus said.
